Men's and women's swim teams overcome Buckeyes

Going into Saturday's meet om with IU, the Ohio State men's swimming and diving team hadn't lost all year and the women's squad had won three straight. But, both of those streaks came to an end as the Hoosier men's and women's teams each posted victories over the Buckeyes in their co-ed, dual meet.\nThe men's team won seven of the eleven events, with three swimmers winning two each, to bolster a 145-96 win. Sophomore Richard Bryant won both the distance events, taking the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:00.53 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.08. Junior sprinter Claes Andersson won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races with times of 20.73 and 45.93 respectively. Sophomore Murph Halasz won both the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.90) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.43).\nIn the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore David Winck took second place, followed by senior David Schulze in third, just three hundredths of a second behind. \nJunior Matt Leach won the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:50.90 time and Schulze took second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.67.\nThe Hoosiers opened the scoring by winning the 400-yard medley relay by more than two seconds. IU took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with junior Mike Payne, Winck, sophomore Nicolas Burgess and Andersson turning in a 3:05.76 time.\nThe women's team also put on a dominant performance against the Buckeyes. IU won the first four events and ten of 13 en route to a 150.50-84.50 win.\n"We had a good weekend," coach Dorsey Tierney said in a statement. "We were missing a few swimmers today but I thought we performed well."\nThe Hoosiers opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The 'A' squad of sophomore Tammy Kostner, senior Megan Geers, sophomore Erin Smith, and junior Meghan Medendorp raced to a first-place, 3:54.24 finish and the 'B' squad of senior Colleen McCracken, freshman Kristen Bradley, senior Tina Gretlund and senior Anne Williams took second at 3:58.42.\nThe squad then reeled off three straight wins in individual events. Freshmen Lauren Torpey and Doherty Colgin tied for first in the 1000-yard freestyle, junior Sarah Fiden took first in the 200-yard freestyle and senior Anne Williams won the 50-yard freestyle. \nIn the 200-yard butterfly, senior Kristy Martin and Smith finished in first and second respectively. The IU contingent also dominated in the 100-yard freestyle as Megendorp, sophomore Jinji Fraser and Williams went 1-2-3. McCracken won the 200-yard backstroke and Fiden and Bradley went 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle.\n"I though Jinji swam very well today," Tierney said in a press release. "Colleen (McCracken) also had a really nice race in the 200 back."\nOn the diving side, junior Cassandra Cardinell and senior Sara Hildebrand finished first and second on the one-meter with scores of 179.40 and 177.20 respectively. Hildebrand also finished first on the three-meter boards. Junior Marc Carlton won the men's one and three-meter events with scores of 212.15 and 224.50 respectively.
