Close win raises mark to 10-1

Team posts 4-3 win over No. 32 University of Miami

Another week and another upset for the IU men's tennis team. The victim this time was the No. 32 University of Miami Hurricanes who fell to the No. 42 Hoosiers 4-3. With the win, the Hoosiers improved their record to 10-1 on the season while the Hurricanes fell to 5-2. The win was IU's seventh over a ranked opponent this year.\nAlthough IU pulled off another upset, the team was forced to come from behind after losing the doubles point. Coach Matt Pledger said he was disappointed in that because the team had worked all week on winning the doubles point.\n"After losing the doubles point to Ball State (on Wednesday) we worked all week on doubles," Pledger said. "Unfortunately, our second and third teams played not to lose instead of to win."\nFreshman Viktor Libal and senior Petr Novotny lost No. 2 doubles 8-6 to Hurricanes Andrew Golub and Colin Purcell. The No. 3 match was the closest, but Hurricanes Todd Widom and Eric Hechtman beat IU freshman John Stone and sophomore Jakub Praibis 9-7.\nAlthough the second and third doubles teams lost in close matches, the No. 1 doubles team of senior Zach Held and sophomore Ryan Recht won their doubles match 8-3 improving their season record to 7-4. \nWith the team trailing entering singles competition, the Hoosiers received a huge lift from Libal, who overcame a shoulder injury to defeat Golub 7-6, 6-2. Libal said he believed it was his change in serving style that helped him notch the win. \n"I changed my serving style in singles and I became more confident in it by the end of the match," Libal said. \nThe match did have its share of controversy, though. Late in the first set, Libal served an ace that Golub originally called out. But he was overruled by the judge watching the match. Pledger said he was very impressed with the freshman's performance, especially in overcoming his injury. \n"To go out there with the injury and still win shows a lot about his character," Pledger said. \nThe Hoosiers also were victorious in No. 3 singles as Novotny won his match 6-1, 7-5. Held won in No. 4 singles 7-6, 6-1 over Purcell. Sophomore Tommy Bagnato won the fourth Hoosier point when he beat Miami's Shauny Hoyes 6-3, 6-1. \nThe Hoosiers will next travel to Kentucky Saturday to face the No. 9 Wildcats. Start time for that game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
