Bad weather does not stop successful regatta for IU

The Hoosiers wrapped up a successful weekend despite more bad weather. The team won 10 out of 18 total races competing against Dayton and Cincinnati. Despite the poor weather, coach Mark Wilson said he felt the team played better than in its last regatta.\n"Overall, it was a good race," Wilson said in a statement. "We definitely improved from last weekend."\nWind and strong currents forced the crews to move the races to a different river that was calmer and easier to race on. The crews also switched the race from the traditional 2000-meter race to a more casual series of three 1000-meter races from floating starts. \nThe varsity eight improved upon its performance last week. The team started slow in its first race but came back strong in the second and third race, winning the third. Senior coxswain Becky England said the varsity eight overcame the inclement weather to perform well.\n"The first race we were off, but the second and third were better," England said. "It was a rough day because of the weather. People worked well together to get things done."\nThe novice four and the junior varsity eight also faired well in their races. Each crew won one of its three races. Sophomore Kristin Storer, a member of the junior varsity eight, said she believes her boat needs to practice a little more despite rowing well on Saturday.\n"We did pretty well, but we still have a lot of work to do," she said.\nWilson said the weekend was beneficial for the development of the team.\n"Dayton and Cincinnati are good programs and our team competed well against them," he said in a statement. "This weekend was a good experience for IU and we will take this experience into our next race. Everyone improved throughout the day today. We will look for continued improvement throughout practice and into our next competition."\nThe novice eight and varsity four both had good days as each crew won two out of their three races. The second novice eight had the best day of all the crews, winning all three races.\nEngland, also a team captain, said the team grew a lot this weekend.\n"It's hard to compare this weekend with last week," she said. "We've learned a lot about how our race should go. We always perform well on our last piece. We've learned a lot about how we work together as a group."\nThe Hoosiers head to the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J., this Saturday for a two-day regatta.
