Hoosiers ousted early

Singles play hurts the team as they fail to make it past the first round in the Big Ten Tournament

The IU women's tennis team failed to advance past the first round of the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since the 2001 season. The Hoosiers (9-16, 1-9 Big Ten) were defeated by the Michigan Wolverines Thursday, 4-2. \nThe loss marked IU's second defeat of the season to Michigan, the other coming earlier this month. The story was the same for IU as they took the top two doubles matches. Junior Martina Grimm and freshman Sarah Batty played in the top doubles position, winning 8-6. Junior Linda Tran moved down to the second doubles spot to capture the 8-3 win with sophomore Dominika Walterova. \nSingles play was again a problem for IU as they won only two of the six singles spots. Batty and Grimm fought hard to win the second and third singles spots, respectively. Batty defeated junior Chrissie Nolan in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Grimm took a more unconventional win as she battled sophomore Leanne Rutherford through two sets, losing 5-7, 3-4 but Rutherford pulled out of the match during the third set.
