Dennison wins Indiana Women's Amateur title \nIU senior All-American Karen Dennison won the 80th Indiana Women's Amateur Golf tournament at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis. The LPGA Giant Eagle Classic participant finished with a 3-over-par 215, which placed her at five shots ahead of her nearest competitor. Dennison birdied on each of the fifth, sixth and 14th holes but bogeyed on three holes. \nFellow Hoosier senior Danah Ford also fared well at the tournament with a final score of 220, good for a second place finish in the tournament. Ford began the final round in fifth place and moved up the ranks with birdies on three holes, shooting a 70. \nDennison's first round score of 70 and Ford's 70 in the final round were the only sub-par performances in the tournament.\nDennison's win gives her 50 more points toward the Alice O'Neal Dye Player of the Year award, giving her a total score of 69 and placing her within one point of the leader.

Hoosiers fare well in ITA Midwest Summer Circuit\nHoosier senior Linda Tran took part in the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit Midwest Region along with teammate and senior Karie Schlukebir on Tuesday. Tran finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, falling only to Ohio State senior Erica Fisk in the final, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(5). \nSchlukebir also had some success, as she won her opening round match 6-0, 6-1 but was defeated 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.\nThe tournament also featured IU incoming freshmen Dora Vastag and Kara Zeder, who had some success in the four-day event. Vastag played impressively throughout the tournament and eventually made it to the semifinals before being beaten by tournament champion Fisk. Zeder was another of Fisk's casualties, as she was defeated by the Buckeye senior in the third round, 1-6, 6-4,1-0(7).\nAfter the event, IU Women's Tennis Assistant Coach Ramiro Azcui said he was happy with the Hoosiers' play.\n"This was a good tournament for all the girls," Azcui said in a press release. "They all played well throughout the weekend. It's great to see them working hard this summer, wanting to improve as the season approaches."

Prosecutors reduce charges against Notre Dame recruit\nVALPARAISO -- Prosecutors have dropped a charge of battery against a Notre Dame football recruit who allegedly pushed a police officer and ran when officers raided a house where he and 10 other people were charged with underage drinking.\nJeff Samardzija, 18, a wide receiver from Valparaiso High School, still faces charges of resisting arrest and illegal consumption of alcohol.\n"When we went back to the report, his conduct constituted resisting more than battery," Porter County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Brian Gensel said Tuesday.\nThe resisting arrest charge carries a jail sentence of up to 180 days, and the illegal consumption charge carries a jail sentence of up to 60 days.\nSamardzija was the only one charged with battery. Three others arrested Saturday also were charged with resisting arrest for running away, police said.\nSamardzija posted a $1,050 cash bond Sunday and was released from the Porter County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court in Portage Aug. 25 -- a day before classes begin at Notre Dame.\nReached at his home Wednesday, Samardzija said he had no comment.\nThe 6-foot-4-inch, 190-pound Samardzija, the runner-up last year for Indiana's Mr. Football, caught 50 passes for 1,044 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He also passed for two touchdowns and scored on a 65-yard run. As a safety, he had 40 tackles and three interceptions.
