Batty, Recht make it to Sweet 16

The International Tennis Association National Collegiate Summer Circuit Championships began competition Saturday. The winners from the event will earn wild card invitationals into the first national tournaments of the 2003-04 collegiate tennis season -- the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American championships. \nThe event featured amateur players from around the country. Six Hoosiers from the IU women's tennis team and two from the men's team played in the event. Seniors Martina Grimm, Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran; sophomore Sarah Batty and freshmen Laura McGaffigan and Dora Vastag represented IU in the women's tournament while junior Ryan Recht and sophomore John Stone competed on the men's side. \nGrimm won her first match against Illinois sophomore Leila Cehajic 6-4, 1-6, 1-0, and was defeated in the second round by Michigan sophomore Michelle DaCosta 6-3, 6-2. Schlukebir did not fare as well as she was defeated in the first round of play 6-3, 6-2.\nTran powered her way through the first round by beating her competition in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Unfortunately, she could not keep her streak going as Tran was defeated in the second round 6-4, 6-4 by Penn State's Shelah Chao. \nBatty did the best of the women's contingent by defeating junior Maelyn Bernoski of Western Michigan. Batty then with her strong play when she won her second round match-up with a 6-0, 6-2 sweep. She will now go on to the round of 16. \nMcGaffigan won her first match 6-4, 6-2 and then fell to Notre Dame sophomore Kristina Stastny 6-2, 6-2.\nFor the men, Recht had a lucrative weekend by defeating his first opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. His second match against Texas A & M sophomore John Nallon brought another sweep to Recht's credit with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Recht also will move on to the round of 16 for further play.\nStone put up a fight, but was defeated in the opening round 6-3, 6-4. Stone then defeated his next opponent in the consolation round 4-6, 6-1, 1-0.
