Randy Heisler named director of track and field\nAfter the retirement of men's coach Marshall Goss earlier this summer, there was a hole in the Indiana track and field program's lineup. Now, that hole has been filled by women's track and field coach Randy Heisler. Heisler will take the coaching helm for the men's and women's programs in a collaborative coaching program. \nThe announcement came Friday from athletic director Terry Clapacs, and he said he was pleased with Heisler's coaching. \n"Coach Heisler has already hit the ground running," Clapacs said in a press release. "His strengths, which include recruiting and teaching, will serve him well in this role."\nThe former Olympic athlete began his head coaching career at IU in 1999 when he took the reigns of IU women's track and field and has driven the program to new levels during his tenure. Heisler was also an assistant coach at IU for nine years, primarily as a throwing coach. Since he began his tenure at IU, the Hoosiers have captured 27 Big Ten titles and athletes under him have been named as All-Americans on 34 occasions.\nMen's soccer team No. 10 in preseason poll\nThe IU men's soccer team has been synonymous with success for much of Jerry Yeagley's coaching career. Now in his final season, the Hoosiers have been given a top-10 ranking in the College Soccer News Preseason Top 30 Poll. The online publication also gave respect to IU's recruiting prowess by giving the program a No. 6 ranking in the country's 2003 recruiting classes. \nComing into the 2003 season, IU returns to action with 12 letterwinners and six starters from the 15-4-2 2002 squad. \nThis season will be tough on the Hoosiers, as their schedule features seven of the teams mentioned within the preseason poll. Penn State leads the list with a No. 7 ranking, followed by No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 15 UConn, No. 16 Saint Louis and No. 18 California in the top 20 of the poll. \nVolleyball team places 5th in Big Ten preseason poll\nComing off of a 20-win season and its third NCAA Tournament appearance in five years, the IU women's volleyball team got a No. 5 ranking in the 2003 Big Ten Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Junior Christina Archibald also was named to the preseason all-league team in the poll.\nArchibald finished the 2002 season with 555 kills, good for a Hoosier single season record, breaking Anne Eastman's 1994 record of 539 kills. Archibald, who is also a high-jumper on the women's track and field team, recorded such impressive numbers despite injury.\n"I'm looking forward to seeing Christina play healthy," coach Katie Weismiller said. "She played with injuries throughout last fall. She was also out all spring so we are looking forward to having her back healthy. She had a great year last year but was really limited as she missed a number of practices. We worked on her arm swing this spring as that's about all we could do. The staff is excited because we expect her to be back and better than ever."\nThe team had only one player graduate and has five returning starters.
