Pirates trade Giles to Padres\nPITTSBURGH -- Brian Giles, one of the NL's most productive players for five seasons, was dealt Tuesday to the San Diego Padres in a long-rumored trade that further depletes the talent-thin Pittsburgh Pirates.\nIn an uncommon late-season deal involving a name player going from one non-contender to another, the Pirates get promising left-handed starter Oliver Perez, minor league outfielder Jason Bay and a player to be named.\nAfter acquiring Giles, the last-place Padres sent All-Star outfielder Rondell White to the Kansas City Royals for two minor league pitchers.\nThe Pirates, headed for an 11th consecutive losing season, are rebuilding from the ground up with younger and lower-priced players.

Colts cut 15 to reach NFL limit\nINDIANAPOLIS -- Wide receiver Drew Haddad, a two-year veteran, was one of 15 players released by the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday to reach the NFL roster limit of 65.\nHaddad made the team in 2001 as an undrafted free agent after returning two punts for touchdowns in the preseason. But he caught only one pass for 11 yards in his career and had just five receptions for 37 yards in the Colts' first three preseason games.\nAlso released Tuesday were quarterback Jim Kubiak and former Purdue running back Montrell Lowe. The Colts waived Lowe for the second time since June. He was an undrafted rookie.\nMore roster cuts must be made by Sunday, the deadline for reaching the NFL's regular-season limit of 53 players.

Clarett won't dress for opener\nCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maurice Clarett took a handoff and ran through a hole -- usually a good sight for Ohio State fans.\nBut instead of his usual No. 13 Buckeyes uniform, Clarett had a purple No. 24 on his jersey so he could mimic Washington tailback Rich Alexis later in the scout-team workout against Ohio State's defense.\nClarett can practice with the second-ranked Buckeyes even though he's serving a "multigame" suspension for his role in an exaggerated car theft report.\nWhile Clarett practiced, university officials worked on a response to the NCAA's allegations of financial misdeeds by the star running back.\nClarett will not be in uniform for the defending national champion Buckeyes' opener Saturday night against No. 17 Washington.
