Around The Game

Women's soccer breaks scoring slump, beats Butler\nThe Hoosiers earned their second win of the season against in-state rival Butler with the help of an explosive offensive performance. The offense broke out of its slump, scoring three goals, while the defense held the Bulldogs' powerful offense scoreless. Sophomore Kristen Zmijewski and freshmen Missy Vierling and Megan Pipkens all scored goals for the Hoosiers, who brought their record to 2-3-0 on the season.\nZmijewski recorded her first goal of the season when she put in the rebound of a missed shot by freshman Ali Brown just 2:29 into the game. Around the 30-minute mark, Pipkens blew past her defender down the right side and fed Vierling with a cross that she was able to tap past the goalie to take a 2-0 lead. Later in the game, with about 36 minutes remaining, Pipkens would lead another offensive charge, this time putting the ball in the back of the net from 15 yards out. Pipkens recorded her second goal of the season and now leads the team in points with five.

Tougher competition sends Hoosiers to .500 record\nThe Hoosiers open Big Ten play this Friday when they travel to Madison, Wis., to take on the Badgers and then on Sunday when they travel to Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers.\nThe IU women's volleyball team traveled to South Bend this weekend for some tough competition at the Notre Dame Shamrock Invitational.\nThe Hoosiers (4-4) opened up their play with a tough defeat at the hands of the No. 15 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The host Irish (6-1) needed four games to dispatch the Hoosiers 30-24, 30-23, 28-30, 30-19. IU raced out to a 6-2 lead and held an 18-16 advantage late in the first game, before the Irish scored five unanswered points and took control of the first game and eventually the match.\n"Notre Dame is a real good team," coach Katie Weismiller said. "I thought they did a real good job isolating hitters, and they did a real nice job offensively. Overall, our service was better tonight, and we keep seeing improvement from game to game."\nThe Hoosiers were led by junior Victoria Zimmerman, who distributed 48 assists and collected 12 digs, and junior outside hitter Christina Archibald, who extended her streak of double-digit kill matches to 18 as she pounded out 19 kills. \nIn their second game of the tournament, the Hoosiers faced off against South Carolina (3-5), who used their experience to stage off a late Hoosier comeback to win a five-set thriller, 30-15, 30-24, 30-32, 23-30, 15-10. In the last game, the Gamecocks won four of the last five points putting the Hoosiers away and sending IU to its third straight loss. \n"We started off really, really flat," Weismiller said. "South Carolina does a nice job offensively. There was a huge difference in our offense when we passed the ball well." \nArchibald finished with a personal and team season high of 23 kills and recorded 15 digs.\nUp next, the Hoosiers return home next weekend for the IU Credit Union Invitational. IU will face Saint Louis Friday at 7 p.m., Austin Peay at noon Saturday and Western Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the tournament finale.
