IU Athletics Director Terry Clapacs issued a reprimand to defensive line coach Joe Cullen after an incident with junior strong safety Herana-Daze Jones during the Hoosiers' loss at Michigan State Oct. 4.\nDuring an injury timeout in the 31-3 loss, Cullen spoke with defensive players and slapped Jones on the side of his helmet. That prompted an investigation from Clapacs in which he directed Cullen to modify his behavior.\nClapacs said in a statement there was no malicious intent from Cullen. \n"In the heat of the moment, coach Cullen was trying to motivate his players, and there was inappropriate contact with the student-athlete," he said. "I did not see this happen, but I've interviewed the young man, coach Cullen and head coach Gerry DiNardo. Game motivation is important, but the behavior that occurred at that moment is not appropriate for our coaches, and that's why I have issued findings."\nClapacs said any future infractions could result in more severe penalties. \n"Our coaches have been informed by coach DiNardo that inappropriate contact with student-athletes is not acceptable, and disciplinary action will be taken if necessary," Clapacs said. "I know that coach Cullen feels badly about the incident. He's apologized to the student-athlete, and we'll move forward with our season"
