IU senior Melissa Brewer's volleyball career has been filled with great achievements and exemplary honors. As her four years at IU come to an end, she continues to rack up the awards. Brewer was named to the 2003 Academic All-District V Second Team Wednesday. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Bloomington native holds a 3.76 GPA while majoring in biology and will be headed to medical school once her IU career concludes.\n"This is quite an honor to receive this award because it really shows how much coach [Katie] Weismiller pushes academics," Brewer said. "This is something that I cherish more than athletic awards."\nBrewer was a member of the Academic All-District V first team the previous two seasons and was one of 12 players selected to the first and second teams this season.\nEarlier this season against Purdue, Brewer became IU's all-time block assists record holder, breaking current IU assistant coach Cydryce Carter's record of 405. Brewer currently leads the team in hitting percentage (.301), block assists (113) and total blocks (119) and sits second on the team with 342 kills.\nLast season Brewer earned All-Big Ten and American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Mideast All-Region honors in addition to being named to the Academic All-Big Ten for the second consecutive season. \n"Melissa has achieved greatness both on the court and in the classroom," Weismiller said. "She should be recognized, and I'm not surprised she earned this honor. She has worked so hard academically, and she is one of the top players in the conference. I'm so pleased that she has been honored with this award"
