LSU's Nick Saban wins AP Coach of the Year award\nNEW YORK -- This is one honor LSU coach Nick Saban won't have to share.\nSaban's steady leadership helped earn him The Associated Press Coach of the Year award Thursday, beating Pete Carroll of Southern California.\n"Even though I'm accepting the honor, it's for all of the players and coaches and support staff, also," Saban said. "They all had as big a part in it as I did. I'm very flattered and honored."\nSaban received 22 votes in balloting by the panel of sports writers and broadcasters on the AP college football poll, five more than Carroll.\nOklahoma's Bob Stoops and Tulsa's Steve Kragthorpe tied for third with four votes each, and Navy's Paul Johnson and Michigan State's John L. Smith tied for fifth with two votes each.

Robbins, Giambi appear before grand jury\nSAN FRANCISCO -- Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins and New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi appeared before a grand jury Thursday. Robbins and Giambi are the latest athletes to testify in an investigation of a nutritional supplements lab.\nNeither commented as they entered the grand jury room. Other athletes were expected to testify later in the day.\nRobbins was one of four Raiders notified by the NFL last month that they failed tests for THG, a source close to the investigation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The steroid was undetectable in drug tests until this summer.\nRobbins, who has been diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder and alcoholism, disappeared from the team on the eve of the Raiders' 48-21 loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl last season.

Indiana Fever name Winters as next coach\nINDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Fever named Brian Winters, a former NBA guard for the Lakers and Bucks, as the team's next coach Thursday.\nWinters replaces Nell Fortner, who resigned after the team finished 16-18 last season. He will be the third coach in Fever history.\nThe team announced Winters' appointment in a news release and scheduled a news conference to introduce him.\n"Brian brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to our franchise," said Kelly Krauskopf, the Fever's chief operating officer. "Not only was he a tremendous player, he also coached alongside some of the most respected coaches in the game"
