Split team finishes 6th, 3rd

The women's swimming and diving team concluded its long weekend in Washington and Ohio with a sixth place and third place finish, respectively. Five members of the team went to the U.S. Open and the team placed sixth. Freshman Leila Vaziri had a Spring National cut time in the 100-meter freestyle, which is one of her strongest events.\nThe team had a good showing at the Open with some good times. The relay team of seniors Erin Gorlesky and Meghan Medendorp and juniors Erin Smith and Vaziri placed ninth in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The meet was a three-day event that concluded Saturday. \nThe other part of the team traveled to the Miami Invitational where they remained in second place until the final day. The finals were at 6 p.m. Saturday night, and until then the team was behind host team Miami 1080 to 1542.5 points, respectively.\nSenior Greer McGettrick won the 100-yard backstroke with the fifth fastest time in school history. Sophomore Kristen Bradley also captured the 400-yard Individual Medley with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:22.31. \nIn the final day, the team led off with senior Sarah Fiden in the 1650-freestyle. She finished the event in sixth place with a time of 16:53.83. She finished behind Miami swimmer Amy Miranda who had a time of 16:45.44. Fiden is from the Oxford, Ohio area, so this was a homecoming for her this season. \nIn the women's 100-freestyle, freshman Annica Lofstedt from Sweden took first in the A final with a time of 24.18. She was followed by freshman teammate Clarissa Wentworth, who finished in sixth place with a time of 25.88. \nIn the women's 200-fly finals, sophomore Lauren Lubus took third with a time of 27.94 in the A final. \nIn the B final Wentworth came in first with an overall tenth place with a time of 28.99. This is the team's final meet until after the holiday break. The team finished third overall despite sending home a few members of the team. They only swam five members Sunday. \nThey will take on Ohio State at 1 p.m. Jan. 10 at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic center.
