Around The Game

Hoosiers face top competition on road\n The Hoosier Hockey squad returned from winter break after a tough road trip against Division I foe Arizona. IU dropped its first meeting against the Wildcats 4-2 and tied the second 1-1.\nIn the first game, IU was down 3-2 in the waning seconds when Arizona scored an empty-netter, putting the Hoosiers in a hole with not enough time to catch up.\nHowever, in the rematch on Saturday, the Hoosiers adjusted to the game plan they faced in their two goal loss. Again, down a goal with 30 seconds left in the third period, IU responded and tied the game in a last half-minute attempt.\nIU squares off against the Boilermakers at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Forum in Fishers, Ind., and again at 4 p.m. Saturday at The Frank in Bloomington.

IU washes out SIU, OSU in tri-meet\nThe IU women's swimming and diving team swept its tri-meet in Bloomington on Saturday, defeating Southern Illinois and Ohio State 197-46, 175-67 respectively. \nOn their way to dominating the pool, the Hoosiers won all but one swimming event, taking second, third and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke. \nThe two wins improve IU's record to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.\nLeading the way for the Hoosiers was double-winner, senior Brooke Taflinger, who took home top honors in the 200 IM and 200-yard breaststroke, in which she set a personal best time of 2:18.64. Taflinger wrapped up her day with a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. \nAlso coming in first on Saturday was freshman Leila Vaziri, who won the 100-yard freestyle and placed second in the 50-yard free. Classmate and teammate, freshman Annica Lofstedt, beat out Vaziri, finishing first in the 50-yard free. Senior Erin Gorlesky and junior Erin Smith placed first and second in the 200-yard freestyle. \nOn the diving side of the meet, freshmen Heather Chapman finished first in the one-meter event, and teammate Lindsay Weigle finished third.

Wrestling posts winning record\n The IU wrestling team was a busy bunch over the holiday break, going 4-2 the past few weeks and pushing their record to 9-3 on the year. The grapplers went 2-1 in each of their meets, one the Buckeye Duals last weekend and Sunday's Wendy's Duals. \nIn Ashland, Ohio, yesterday, the team defeated VMI 31-6 and Pittsburgh 19-13 but lost to Ohio 25-15 in the Wendy's Duals. Senior Coyte Cooper kept his perfect record alive by going 3-0 on the day in the 141-pound division. \nThe Hoosiers also had a successful day last weekend at the Buckeye Duals. The team went 2-1 on the day at the event held in Columbus, Ohio. IU defeated Buffalo 27-8 and Bloomsburg 23-15 before losing to Big Ten rival Ohio State 29-17. \nAlso perfect on the day was Cooper. His two decisions and one pin kept his flawless record intact. Dubuque went 3-0 at the meet as well, scoring three decisions over his foes. Rounding out the undefeated wrestlers for IU was Richardson. The junior, ranked 13th in the nation in the class, was an easy decision winner in two of his matches and closed out the day with a close 3-2 victory over Buffalo's Ed Pawlak.\nIU returns home this upcoming weekend for a four-team meet held Saturday at University Gym. The team will host Eastern Michigan, Duke, and Missouri Valley with matches starting at 11:00 a.m. They quickly get back to action the following day in Indianapolis as they compete in the Indianapolis Duals. That meet also kicks off at 11:00 a.m.

Men's swimming beats Ohio State\nThe Hoosier men's swimming and diving teams returned from their Holiday Training Trip in Florida to post dual victories in their home pool, defeating Southern Illinois 175-67 and Big Ten rival Ohio State 130-111. The work they did in the Sunshine State apparently paid off, as their record improved to 3-5 after a very dissatisfying 1-5 start. \n"It was nice to swim well, especially after coming off some very tough training," head coach Ray Looze said in a statement. "I was happy to get a win and win some close races. We are making progress as a swim team."\nFreestyle was the one discipline in which IU showed exceptional depth, as seniors Claes Andersson, and Mike Payne along with Kyle Ruth finished first, second and third respectively in the 50-yard sprint. Colin Russell would finish first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, as well. Junior Murph Halasz won the 200-yard butterfly event, posting a personal best time of 1:49.38. \nIn the breaststroke events, Kevin Swander stood out among his teammates, winning the 200-yard race with another personal best time of 2:02.17. \nIn diving, Ryan Fagan continued to hold up the fort for the Hoosiers, being the only male diver eligible for competition this year. He finished third in the one meter competition and second in the three meter event, posting scores of 255.75 and 292.95 in each.
