In a two-game home stand against Midwest rival Ohio State, the Hoosiers looked like two different teams with a win and a loss in a 24-hour span.\nIU won the first game 5-3, before losing the second 4-1. The loss comes at a particularly bad time for the Hoosiers, as they are in a tight race with Bowling Green for the last position to advance to Nationals.\nHockey fans in attendance for the first game were treated to a classic fast-paced, hard-hitting hockey contest. Both teams executing well on offense and defense made for a back-and-forth game. Freshman goalie Sam Veith fought off an aggressive onslaught by the Buckeye offense, while IU attacked with a formidable offense of its own. Goals by sophomores Jon Laughner, CJ Parrilli, Reed Schafer and freshman Matt Wellington put the pressure on Ohio State, with senior David Dassell's penalty shot for a goal to ice the win.\nLaughner said the team did just what they set out to do Friday night in going on a run and putting the Buckeyes in an early hole.\n"We did exactly what we wanted to last night," Laughner said. "We came out, scored three goals right in a row. That's our game, and when we're on our game it is tough to stop."\nIU coaches Brad Lutsch and Jamie Morris were pleased with their team's play on Friday but seemed dejected at their play and effort Saturday afternoon.\n"(Friday) both teams battled hard and played well," Morris said. "Both teams came out to play, and it made for a great game. But today was a different story."\nLutsch was especially displeased with the lack of teamwork in the Hoosiers 4-1 loss. IU could not get into the rhythm that allowed them to rattle off goal after goal Friday, and the defense allowed for mistakes as OSU capitalized while taking control of the game.\n"Yesterday, we played as a team -- and played well," Lutsch said. "Today, we played like a bunch of individuals. We didn't show up as a team. We didn't play as a team. I don't know what our guys had on their minds, but it wasn't about winning this game."\nDespite not executing well early in the contest, IU was down only 2-1 in the final period. With twelve minutes remaining, Veith was called for a delay of game penalty, sending Laughner to the box and putting the Hoosiers shorthanded when they needed a rally.\nBut the OSU offense was too much, as they quickly worked the power play situation to their advantage, making the score 3-1 with time ticking away. Just three minutes later, a Buckeye three-on-one fast break led to the goal that would put the game out of reach.\n"Today was just one of those days where nothing seemed to go right," Laughner said of his team's uncharacteristic play. "We just couldn't get a bounce. They were getting all of them; we didn't get any. When things don't go your way, I guess things just don't go your way." \n"We rattled off three games in a row; we were getting some breaks. Things can turn on you that quickly, I guess."\nIf the Hoosiers want things to go their way late into the month of February, they will have to refocus and prepare for a road trip against division foes Ferris State and Michigan State.\nIU, currently sitting in third place, is in control of their destiny down the stretch but face nothing less than the toughest of division opponents in the remainder of their schedule.\n"We have two tough games coming up," Morris said. "We need our guys to come back to practice refocused and ready to play as a team. We're going to have to get our hard-hats back on, our work boots back on and get to work this week."\nThe Hoosiers head back to practice today looking to build on a shaky weekend and prepare for the last few weeks of the regular season. The action this weekend starts Friday night in East Lansing, Mich., and continues at 8 p.m. Saturday against Ferris State.\n-- Contact staff writer Jeff Fuldauer at jfuldaue@indiana.edu.
