The IU women's swimming and diving team finished third in the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, which concluded Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. After having a hold on first place going into Saturday's events, IU's final tally of 563.5 points trailed behind champion Michigan's 604.5 and Penn State's second place finish of 590.5. \nIU had several strong performances throughout the competition. Senior Sarah Fiden was IU's top place finisher in swimming events, taking runner-up in the 1650-yard freestyle. Freshman diver Lindsay Weigle also put in a strong showing, finishing second in the diving competition with 402.5 points. Wednesday, the 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Doherty Colgin, freshman Leila Vaziri, senior Erin Gorlesky and Fiden eclipsed a school record in placing third. \nThe team swam a time of 7:13:13, which toppled the former school record of 7:13:76 set at last year's Big Ten Championships.\nSeveral Hoosiers had stellar preliminary qualifying runs. Senior Brooke Taflinger broke her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley with a new time of 2:01:12. The time was good enough to earn her second honors in the preliminary and an NCAA "B" cut time. \nDespite the slow start, the Hoosiers were able to rally on the third day of competition and finish at third place. The Big Ten Championships do not signal the end of the swimming and diving season, however. Indiana hosts a Last Chance Meet on Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
