Hoosiers double up Raiders

Wright St. never held lead during weekend sweep by IU

The Hoosiers extended their winning streak to seven games after sweeping Wright State in a doubleheader Saturday. While IU (15-7) was never able to get much offense going, it never let the Raiders (8-13) hold a lead in either game.\nThe first game of the day saw IU have another productive first inning in which the team scored four runs. Sophomore center fielder Reggie Watson led the game off with a solo home run, his first of the year. Later in the first, senior outfielder Kevin Mahar blasted his team-leading 10th home run of the year. \nIn the fourth, Wright State began to make it a game with a solo home run by pitcher Chris Coleman to start things off. Two batters later with a runner on first, catcher Bryan Vickers homered to center, bringing the Raiders to within three runs of tying the game. The fourth run of the inning was walked in before the Hoosiers finally crushed the rally and held on to win, 6-4. \nDespite giving up four runs in just four innings, sophomore pitcher Josh Lewis (3-1) earned his third win of the season.\nSenior pitcher Nick Vitielliss (2-1) got the call in the second game, and he responded brilliantly, allowing just one run while striking out five batters in seven innings. \nThe Hoosiers got on the board first, scoring three runs in the third inning. Senior catcher Cody Wargo singled to left field, and then senior infielder David Hughes walked, bringing up Watson. Watson then tripled to right field, scoring both Wargo and Hughes. Before the Raiders could get out of the inning, junior infielder Corby Heckman singled to center, scoring Watson.\nThe Raiders' only run of the game came off a solo home run by shortstop Ross Oeder in the seventh inning. IU added three insurance runs in the sixth inning and then two more in the eighth to win, 8-1.\nOn the day, Watson went 4 for 6 with two runs and three RBIs. Junior outfielder Joe Kemp also played well, going 4 for 6 with four runs and one RBI, while senior shortstop Seth Bynum went 3 for 6 with two runs and three RBIs, taking his RBI total to a team-leading 35. Bynum also stole two bases, taking his total to a team-leading 15 in just 16 attempts. \nThe Hoosiers next face Valparaiso at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sembower Field.
