Hoosier net most victories since 1997

The Hoosier softball team traveled to Kentucky Wednesday looking to improve their record and inch them closer to the Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers (29-28, 4-10 Big Ten) were successful in the first game, handing the Wildcats a 3-1 loss. Kentucky (25-28-1) regrouped in the second game and downed IU, 4-2. \nIn the first game, sophomore Lauren Hines, who was 4 for 6 on the day, cracked a home run in the fourth inning, giving IU the 1-0 lead. In the next inning, Wildcat freshman Ashley Fertic evened the score as she drove in junior Megan Brooks. \nThe Hoosiers offense produced again in the seventh inning as junior Ashley Griffiths drove in senior Abby Page. Senior Val White then hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Heather Hohs, increasing the Hoosier lead to 3-1 for the final margin.\nKentucky struck first in the second game as Fertic hit an RBI single in the second inning, giving the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead. \nKentucky extended the lead to 2-0 in the third as freshman Brooke Marnitz singled to center field, driving in Cooper. \nFreshman Tory Yamaguchi countered in the fourth as she hit her eighth home run of the season.\nBut the Wildcats proved too much and knocked off IU, 4-2.\nWith the victory Wednesday, this year's team has more victories than any team since 1997 with six games left in the season.
