2 IU golfers named All-Region\nIU juniors Jeff Overton and Heath Peters were named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team Wednesday. The Hoosier duo were two of 15 golfers selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the team.\n"It's nice for these two outstanding players to be recognized on the All-Region team," said IU coach Mike Mayer. "They are in a very select group of athletes from this area of the country, and it's a nice, well-deserved honor for both these players."\nOverton, the 2004 Big Ten Golfer of the Year, recently completed his junior campaign finishing 20th at the NCAA Championships. Overton's stellar 2004 performance ranks him among the best golfers to don the cream and crimson. His 70.62 average was the lowest season-stroke average in IU history, and his career stroke average of 72.25 also ranks as the lowest in school history.\nOverton won five individual titles and received the Les Bolstad Award for the lowest stroke average in the Big Ten. He was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week on five occasions and has been chosen to represent the United States in next month's 2004 Fuji Xerox U.S.A. Collegiate Championship in Japan. \nPeters earned second-team All-Big Ten honors this season and finished his season with a 30th place showing at the NCAA Central Regionals, narrowly missing an opportunity to accompany Overton at the NCAA Championships.\nPeters ended his junior season with a scoring average of 73, the eighth lowest in school history, and his career scoring average of 73.92 is third lowest in the Hoosier program's history, behind only Overton and former IU All-American Randy Leen. \nAlthough Peters didn't win any individual titles during the 2003-04 season, he helped pace the team, finishing in the top 10 on six different occasions. The Hoosier team claimed four team titles, the second-most in school history and the most since 1975.
Water polo garners academic honors \nSeven members of IU's water polo team were recognized for their work in the classroom this week by the American Water Polo Coaches Association when it announced its annual All-Academic honorees.\nThe team's collective team grade point average was one of only 10 schools higher than a 3.25. \n"It has always been our goal as a program to produce the finest student-athletes that we can, and academic performance has always been important to us," said coach Barry King. "Our team's performance in the classroom is just another statement as to how we hold that as a priority, and we are very proud of that accomplishment."\nThe seven honorees tie the school record set in 2001, and over the last four seasons, the Hoosiers have had a total of 22 Academic All-Americans. Senior Melissa Pietras also became the first Hoosier to earn Academic All-America honors throughout her four-year career. \nThe Hoosiers' team GPA was among the 10 best in the country. The Hoosiers had the highest team GPA of any team ranked in the top 20 at the season's end, and the team finished the 2004 season ranked 13th in the country. \nJoining Pietras with All-Academic honors are juniors Krista Peterson, Jessica Goldner and Kandace Waldthaler; sophomores Emily Schmitt and Janis Pardy; and freshman Kristin Zernicke.
