IU falls to Cal, beats Stanford

IU women's field hockey team opened up the 2004-05 season this weekend with mixed results. The Hoosiers traveled west to northern California to face off against University of California-Berkeley and Stanford.\nThe California Golden Bears out-shot IU 19-11, including 13-1 in the first half, on their way to beating the Hoosiers Saturday. The 3-1 defeat gave IU's field hockey team a check in the loss column in its season opener. Though IU out-shot the Golden Bears 13-5 on goalkeeper Kelly Knapp in the second half, the Hoosiers could not hold off Cal's midfielder Alana Smith. Smith punctuated a two-goal effort, with the second goal coming late in the second half. \nThe Golden Bears stormed out to a strong 2-0 run with goals scored by Teela Crosthwaite and Smith. Smith's first strike was scored quickly in the eighth minute of the game as Cal took advantage of IU's nerves in the first half. \n"They came out confident, aggressive, and controlled the game from the start, while we came out a little tentative and nervous," IU coach Amy Robertson said.\nSophomore Rachel Telian scored IU's lone goal in the second half, the first of her career, with junior Lesley Wiler notching the assist. \nDespite senior goalkeeper Katie Kanara's eight saves for the Hoosiers, the team could only manage one goal in the second half against California. \nStill, the Hoosiers should not be upset with their loss to the Golden Bears, as IU came out aggressively in the second half against a program that qualified for the NCAA tournament. \n"Cal was very polished for the first game of the year," Robertson noted. \nGolden Bears coach Shellie Onstead won her 99th career victory with the 3-1 win versus the Hoosiers.\nRobertson would say later, \n"It was a game of two different halves," Robertson said. "Cal controlled the first half, while we came out more aggressive in the second. We kept attacking and just missed out on a couple of goals." \nSunday, the Hoosiers were able to strike twice in the second half and hold off a late surge by Stanford to claim the team's first win of the season. Sophomore Morgan Miller and freshman Kate O'Connell scored their first tallies for IU this season and evened the Hoosiers' record at 1-1. \nIU came out strong in the second half and held the Stanford attack in check, out-shooting the Cardinal 8-1 in the final half.\n"In the first half, we came out much like yesterday -- a little flat," Robertson said. "In the second half, we made more adjustments and were more aggressive."\nThe Hoosiers finished last season 8-10 and in the program's four-year history have never finished with a record above .500.\n"We have high expectations for this season," Robertson said. "For the second game of the year, we saw some good things.\nIU will look to add another victory this weekend when Ball State and Southwest Missouri State visit Bloomington.
