IU takes 3rd-straight Intercollegiate title\nIU took home its third straight Indiana Intercollegiates title Friday evening at Purdue University. The championship has become an IU staple in recent years. \nThe Hoosiers took five of the top seven places in dominating the 8,000-meter course. Indiana State University was the closest competition, finishing 29 points behind IU's winning 20 point tally.\nJunior All-American Sean Jefferson took the individual title with a time of 25 minutes, 39 seconds, a nine-second margin separating him from the second place finisher.\nFinishing third after breaking away with Jefferson midway through the race was senior Tom Burns at 26:01. He was followed soon after by a pack of teammates, with junior Stephen Haas in fourth, seven seconds back. One second later junior Eric Redman trailed Haas across the finish line. Junior All-American John Jefferson rounded out IU's scoring in seventh with a time of 26:15. Junior Mike Diederich, an 800-meter specialist in track, made his debut as IU's only other finisher, crossing the line in 47th place.
Women's cross country wins by 1\nAs sophomore Jessica Gall forged to the top of the last hill at Purdue's cross country course this Saturday, she made her move. \n"Once I got to the top of the hill, I went for it and pushed myself," Gall said.\nShe went on to win the 5-kilometer race by eight seconds over Ball State's Jill Scully. Gall's first place performance, as well as junior Kelly Siefker's third place finish and sophomore Kristin Whitezell's sixth place finish aided the women's cross country team in its one point victory over Purdue in the Indiana Intercollegiates. \nThe Hoosiers, who won this meet last year, bested Purdue 45-46 to give IU back-to-back titles in the event. Ball State finished third with 59 points. Senior Mindy Peterson and junior Allison Miller rounded out the scoring for the women, finishing 11th and 24th, respectively. \nCoach Judy Wilson was particularly impressed with Whitezell and Peterson's smart tactical races. Wilson told them to stay conservative in the relatively flat first two kilometers and then to try and make up ground during the hilly three kilometer part of the course.\n"At the 2k they were further back and at about the 3,500 mark, they had moved up to about 11th and 14th" Wilson said.
Field hockey's win streak snapped \nA school record and a six-game winning streak was snapped this weekend when the No. 17 ranked Hoosiers women's field hockey team fell to William and Mary University. \nThe Hoosiers won their sixth game against Louisville on Friday. With both teams tied at one at the end of regulation, Sophomore Jodi Murphy put in the winning goal 81 minutes into the game.\n"We found a way to win (Friday)," IU coach Amy Robertson said of the win. "We struggled at times (Friday) to find the ball and attack." \nComing into the weekend, the Hoosiers led the Big Ten in shots per game with 22.5. Louisville held the Hoosiers to just seven shots, while the Cardinals took nine. Against William and Mary, IU managed only three shots.\nThe Hoosiers dropped their second game of the season by giving up 20 penalty corners and taking only one penalty corner themselves.\n"The game was a couple cards short of a full deck," Robertson said. "We had missed opportunities in the open field."
Women's golf finishes 10th\nThe IU women's golf team completed the Mary Fossum Invitation at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., this weekend with a 10th place finish, led by junior Molly Redfearn who turned in the tournament of her career. \nThe Hoosiers improved on last week's performance while firing a three round total of 960 (319-314-327), compared to last week's 969. IU was, however, 41 strokes behind tournament champion Michigan, who shot a total of 919 (306-303-310). Finishing just behind Michigan, was the home Michigan State squad shooting a 925 (303-309-313). \nRedfearn led the IU attack and finished in a tie for second with a total of 226 (75-75-76). Redfearn finished a mere seven strokes off the winning score of 219 (72-72-75), which was turned in by Michigan's Brianna Broderick. Redfearn's second place finish is a career-best performance for the Racine, Wisc., native.
Women's tennis wins opener\nThe IU women's tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich., this weekend to open its season competing in Western Michigan University's Bronco Invitational. The Hoosiers return to Bloomington on a high note after a successful weekend.\nSophomores Cecile Perton and Kara Zeder stood out among the Hoosiers as they cruised through the weekend, going undefeated (4-0) in singles play. Senior Dora Vastag, IU's No. 1 singles standout, won her first three matches of the 2004 fall season before dropping the championship match of the flight "A" bracket to Victoria Domina of Eastern Michigan, 6-3, 6-2.\nThe IU doubles teams looked especially impressive, racking up a record of 13-4 over the course of the weekend. All-American junior Sarah Batty teamed up with sophomore Laura McGaffigan to compile an undefeated 4-0 record throughout the weekend, defeating Marquette's Maria Calbeto and Erin Watkins 8-1, Sunday. Three freshman, Brianna Williams, Nikki Hein and Amanda El-Tobgy, made their Hoosier debuts this weekend, all closing out the tournament with doubles victories Sunday.
