Fog-covered Newport, R.I., at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, forcing the cancellation of the final round of the Adams Cup: Five holes remained in the third round when it was ruled that play could not continue. The scores at the end of Monday's second round became the final standings, placing the Hoosiers in fifth for the second consecutive week. \nAfter two rounds of play Monday, the IU men's golf team stood in fifth place at 591, two strokes behind fourth-place University of Rhode Island and 16 strokes behind tournament champion Michigan State. The Hoosiers shot 298 in the first round and 293 in the second. Coach Mike Mayer had hoped the Hoosiers would keep improving in the final round, but optimism couldn't hold back the weather. \n"Overall, we came back in the afternoon round and really had a nice round going, but we struggled down the stretch," Mayer said in a statement after Monday's play. "We still have an opportunity to move up the leaderboard if we come back tomorrow with a strong final round."\nSenior Jeff Overton finished just shy of capturing his first tournament championship of the season. Overton owned the Hoosiers' highest finish, shooting scores of 68 and 71. Overton's two-round total of 139 put him in second place, one shot back of tournament champion and Georgia Southern University junior Jon David Kennedy. Mayer said he believed Overton was on the right track entering the final round.\n"Jeff's first round really kept the team in the thick of things. He had a chance to go real low in round two, but made some mistakes," Mayer said. "However, he is playing well and (was) in position to win this tournament."\nOverton was joined in the top 20 by senior teammate Heath Peters, who shot 149 to tie for 16th, and junior Aaron Walters, who tied for 19th with a total of 150. \nThe Hoosiers return to the links Oct. 11 for the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio.
