Veto this lame knockoff film

If you are looking for a cookie-cutter version of Mandy Moore's flick "Chasing Liberty," then "First Daughter" starring Katie Holmes is the right film for you.\nHolmes plays Samantha Mackenzie, the president's daughter, and just like Moore's character in "Chasing Liberty," Sam feels trapped by the life she leads. Her solution? Fly 3,000 miles away to attend a beautiful college in California. But, you guessed it, flying away only complicates Sam's problems. \nThe only thing that is believable about Sam's first experiences at college is the size of her dorm room and even that is debatable. From glorified frat houses to outlandish parties in the quad, I found myself chuckling at the so-called "typical college experience" that appeared on the screen before me. \nAs time proceeds, Sam is fed up with the Secret Service agents that constantly follow her, and she requests that the load be lightened. Her request is honored, coincidentally at the same time she meets dashing James (Marc Blucas), who just so happens to be the new resident adviser. \nThings seem to brighten up for Sam as she spends time with James. She experiences things she never did while living in the White House, such as seeing movies, eating pizza and wearing sweatshirts. Holmes seems to struggle to be excited about these fun-filled activities, but even good actresses struggle with bad writing. \nPerhaps the audience is supposed to feel bad for Sam, but those feelings just don't come across in the film's writing or in its acting for that matter. Michael Keaton as president delivers dry, unbearable speeches that make it a wonder his character was ever elected. \nThe only breath of fresh air in the film is Sam's quick-witted roommate (R&B singer Amerie) who tries to show her the ropes of a normal teenage life. \nThe main component missing from this romantic comedy? The comedy. In a packed theater, not one snicker was heard throughout the entire film.\nI expected more from the film's director Forest Whitaker. This actor-turned-director gave promising hope with "Waiting to Exhale," but failed to deliver with "First Daughter."\nOverall, "First Daughter" is a slower, less interesting, G-rated and just plain boring version of the not-so-great film "Chasing Liberty"
