Volleyball drops 2 weekend matches\nThe IU women's volleyball team extended its streak this weekend against the nationally ranked squads, Ohio State and Penn State. The streak, however, is not one the Hoosiers are proud of, as IU has lost nine consecutive matches.\nIn Friday's match against the No. 9 Buckeyes, the Hoosiers could not seem to get their game on track, losing 3-1 (30-22, 30-20, 27-30, 30-19). \nAfter dropping the first two games of the match, IU bounced back with a 30-27 victory in the third game. The momentum did not carry over to the final game though, as the Hoosiers were handed a 30-19 loss.\nThe Hoosiers were led by junior Rachel Gerling with 18 kills while Ohio State's Stacey Gordon led both teams with 37 kills in a match which featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes.\nSaturday, things did not get any easier for the Hoosiers. IU (6-11, 0-6) was beat by the Penn State Nittany Lions in straight sets (30-15, 30-24, 30-15).\nSenior Katie Pollom led IU with 11 kills while sophomore Tasha Arsenych added 26 assists.\nPenn State is currently ranked No. 6 in the country, its only loss this season having come against No. 1 ranked Minnesota.\nThe Hoosiers will try to end their losing ways and pick up their first Big Ten victory of the season when they travel to Madison, Wisc., on Friday to face Wisconsin (9-5, 3-3). IU will then face the Wildcats of Northwestern (6-10, 1-5) Saturday before heading back home to host Minnesota (16-2, 5-1).
Field hockey splits away games Evanston \nThe IU women's field hockey team opened up a two-game road trip in Evanston, Ill., with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Northwestern Wildcats Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field. \nIU made the first noise with a goal by freshman Meredith Brown in the 17th minute, assisted by sophomore Lydia Schrott and junior Lesley Wiler. \nNorthwestern answered 10 minutes later when Candice Cooper tallied a goal to tie the game up at one. In the 86th minute, Wildcat forward Christian Nannicelli received an assist from Holly Palin and scored the game-winning goal. \n"I thought we totally dominated today," IU coach Amy Robertson said. "We played good enough to win but didn't finish." \nIU goaltender Kate Kanara made 10 saves in the losing effort while the Hoosiers recorded 12 shots, including five on goal. Kanara would only record two saves when the Hoosiers defeated New Hampshire at Lakeside Field, 2-1, due in part to late game heroics by Kate O'Connell in the 51st minute. \nOnce again IU took the lead in the first half when Wiler and Brown hooked up to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 push. The goal was Wiler's third of the season. \nNew Hampshire came riding back when Katie Wright tied the game up in the 44th minute off a penalty corner from MacKenzie Stuart.\nBut O'Connell would get the last word when she shot the ball in the middle of a scramble past UNH's goalkeeper Christine Buckley. \n"Coming off a disappointing game yesterday, we wanted to come out aggressively," Robertson said. "We showed mental toughness and I am very pleased with the play of our bench."
Men's tennis shows dominance at meet \nThe Hoosiers maintain an 8-6 record through the two-game stint in Evanston. IU will next travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami (Ohio) at 5 p.m. \nThe IU men's tennis team dominated the field this weekend at the Purdue Invitational -- its first full competition as a team -- winning three singles titles and two doubles titles in the double elimination tournament.\nJunior Neil Kenner led the way for the Hoosiers with straight set victories Saturday in the opening and semifinal rounds of the Gold Flight bracket. Sunday, he defeated James Low of Butler University in the singles championship match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Fellow junior Dmytro Ishtuganov finished third in the Gold Flight.\nSophomore David Bubenicek followed up with a singles title in the Black Flight, defeating Scott Warner of Purdue, 6-2, 6-3. Men's swimming falls to tough Texas\nIn both team's first dual matches of the season, the IU men's swim and dive team fell to national power University of Texas 170-130 Friday at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center at the Student Recreational Sports Center. \nDespite dropping 11 of the 16 events, the Hoosier divers took the top-three places in the one-meter and three-meter events.\n"We lost about 98 percent of the close races," IU coach Ray Looze said in a statement. "You cannot win a dual meet against a team like Texas that has the experience and tradition that it has when you do not win the close races. This meet will benefit us down the road."\nIU will be back in action Friday against Evansville in a co-ed meet at home. Parents weekend festivities will also be held.
