Around The Game

Women's swim and dive falls to ASU\nSaturday, the No. 17 ranked IU women's swimming and diving team took on No. 21 Arizona State University in Bloomington at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. After going through a shortened meet of only 16 events, the Hoosiers fell to the Sun Devils, 156.5-142.5. \nIU took 10 of the 16 events, but the strength and depth of the ASU team proved to be too much for the Hoosiers to handle. Though IU never maintained its lead after the first event, it maintained pace and never let Arizona State run away with the meet. \nIU coach Dorsey Tierney said she saw glimmers of hope during the meet. \n"I saw a lot of positives out there today," Tierney said. "We had some people stepping up and learning how to win with Sarah Bugden doing well in particular."\nBugden, a junior, allowed the Hoosiers to stay on track by taking the 200-yard butterfly, the 200-yard backstroke and helping the 200-yard freestyle relay take first with a time of 1 minute, 34.59 seconds, the 10th fastest time in program history.

Volleyball drops 2 matches to PSU, OSU\nThe IU volleyball team lost two road matches this weekend, both to nationally ranked teams.\nTraveling to Penn State Friday, the Hoosiers were never able to get on track against the No. 6 Nittany Lions. IU lost in three games, 18-30, 21-30, 27-30.\nIn the match's first game, Penn State dominated throughout, holding the Hoosiers to a .061 hitting percentage. The Nittany Lions continued their strong play into the second game, taking a 2-0 match lead.\nIn the third game, IU rallied late, but Penn State was too much, winning 30-27.\nThe Hoosiers did not fare any better Sunday against No. 7 Ohio State, losing once again in straight sets. IU lost all three games with a score of 20-30.\nThe IU offense struggled throughout the match, mustering only a .077 hitting percentage compared to the Buckeyes' .287.\nPollom was the only Hoosier who registered double-digit kills.\nThe loss dropped IU to 8-15 overall, 2-10 in the Big Ten. \nThe Hoosiers will return home this upcoming weekend for matches against Michigan and Michigan State.

Men's swim and dive does Texas sweep\nIt was a big weekend for the Men's Swimming and Diving team in the state of Texas. The Hoosiers are returning home to Bloomington with a sweep this weekend in their two scheduled dual meets. Friday, sophomore Colin Russell helped the Hoosiers get off to a good start this weekend against the No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies while finishing with two event titles in a 137-106 Hoosier victory. \nThe young crop of swimmers also grabbed event titles with victories by Ben Hesen and Todd Patrick in their respective events. \nSenior Marc Carlton helped pace IU in the men's three-meter and one-meter diving events, finishing first and second, respectively. The Hoosiers completed their perfect weekend with a 154-89 win against the SMU Mustangs Saturday. Patrick contributed to the victory with two event titles, and freshman John Kevin Koehler recorded his first event title in the Men's 1,000-yard freestyle. Carlton repeated his outstanding performance against the Aggies with similar event titles against unranked SMU. \nWith a 3-1 record in dual meets this year, the Hoosiers come home to Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center for another challenge this weekend. IU will face No. 15 Northwestern Friday and meet both No. 20 Kentucky and Southwest Missouri State Saturday.
