Overton ranked No. 1 golfer in nation by Golfstat\nIU senior golfer Jeff Overton sits atop the most recent Golfstat rankings following the Evansville native's performance this fall. This is not Overton's first time at the No. 1 ranking. Last season, Overton reached No. 1 during a year in which he was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Year. \n"What else is there to say about Jeff Overton?" said IU coach Mike Mayer in a statement. "He continues to build an incredibly impressive resume. He had an outstanding fall and deserves the ranking. Jeff is the best player in the country." \nThis fall, Overton won the Xavier Invitational by 11 strokes, as he fired a final round 61, the second-lowest round in NCAA history. \nOverton finished second at the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I. The senior was primed to make a run a take the lead in the tournament, but fog forced an early end to the tournament before Overton could make his surge to the top spot. Overton has claimed six individual tournament titles in his IU career.\nHe led the team with a 69.85 scoring average in five fall events (13 rounds), lowering his career mark to a school record 72.00.\nOverton owns the five lowest scores in school history, with his impressive final round at this year's Xavier Invitational topping the record books.
Sophomore safety recognized for work in classroom\nIU sophomore safety Will Meyers was named to the Academic All-District V Football Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday.\nMeyers, last season's Big Ten Defensive Freshman of the Year according to The Sporting News, started three games early in the season before sustaining an injury confining him to the sidelines.\n"I live a very structured life, so it's pretty easy to balance school and football," Meyers said in a statement. "Whenever I'm not working on football, I'm working on school work. Or when I'm not studying, I'm on the football field or watching film. I try to keep a good balance and stay focused. It's mostly about time management."\nLast season Meyers recorded 83 tackles (65 solo stops), good enough to rank third on the Hoosier defense. The Chesterfield, Mo., native's play not only earned him The Sporting News' distinction of Big Ten Defensive Freshman of the Year, but the publication also named Meyers to their First Team Freshman All-American team.\nAn athlete must have a grade point average of 3.2, be in his second year at his institution and play in over 50 percent of the team's games to be eligible for the award. The Academic All-District selections will appear on the national ballot and are voted on by members of CoSIDA. The Academic All-America team will be released Nov. 22.
