The only senior on the IU women's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better senior night.\nWhen IU battled Butler University Friday night, senior midfielder Kim Grodek scored two goals and tallied an assist en route to a 4-0 Hoosier victory. \n"We had a high paced game from the beginning," Grodek said, "We wanted a big win before we head into the (Big Ten) tournament. My team gave me a great senior night. I was really excited to play tonight, so they just sent me off well."\nThe four IU goals occurred in the first 11 minutes of the game, marking the most goals scored in a single half of play this season.\n"We've had the potential to do that all year I think," IU coach Mick Lyon said, "And our preparation was top notch. We were right in tune with getting things done. We've been asking (the players) all year to come out and have fireworks go off when the whistle blows." \nGrodek scored the first goal of the contest just three minutes into the first half from six yards out, placing the ball in the upper right corner of the goal off a pass from freshman Lindsay McCarthy.\nA hand ball just outside the Butler penalty box set up the second Hoosier goal. The freekick bounced right off the Butler wall, but Grodek picked up the deflected ball and volleyed it back into the penalty box where freshman forward Kristin Radcliffe headed the ball from eight yards out into the net.\nGrodek struck again and scored just a minute later off a corner kick from junior Lauren Lamping for her second goal of the game and the third for IU.\nIn the 11th minute, sophomore forward Megan Pipkens broke through two Butler defenders and laid off a shot from 12 yards out into the left corner of the net for a goal that Butler goalkeeper Katie Sanders could only watch pass by. \nButler almost got on the board in the 31st minute when a shot caused IU goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro to lose her balance, forcing her to stumble backwards right on top of the goal line but managed to keep the ball from crossing.\nLyon took advantage of IU's lead by resting his veterans and cleared his bench allowing several Hoosiers to see their very first action of the season.\n"You want to protect players a little bit," Lyon said, "And you when you're beating a team 4-0, that's an opportunity to get some youngsters some playing time. \nA Butler forward almost destroyed Fabbro's clean sheet late in the second half when a missed tackled by an IU defender allowed the Butler forward to get past the IU backline for a one-on-one confrontation with Fabbro. Fabbro dove to get a palm on the player's chip shot.\nBefore Friday's game, players talked about how important it was to have a strong showing for their game against Butler. \nThis game was the last regular season game for the Hoosiers and the last tune up before they take on the No. 1 seeded Penn State Nittany Lions in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. \n"A couple more goals in the second half would have been nice, I'm not going to lie," Fabbro said, "One thing we talked about was just to make sure once our intensity dropped down to try and fight for a few more goals, but overall we played outstanding. We're going to go Columbus, Ohio and tear up the Nittany Lions."\n-- Contact staff writer John Fischer at jbfische@indiana.edu.
