Women's track and field begin season\nThe IU women's track and field team opened up its indoor season on a dominating note as the team held its annual Hoosier Open meet. The Hoosiers won 8 out of 19 events and had strong placed finishes in the others.\nSenior Ara Towns and freshman Zakiya Robinson swept first and second place in the 60-yard dash with times of 7.61 and 7.91 seconds, respectively.\nIn the 200-meter dash, the IU women took places one through four. Finishing first for the Hoosiers was sophomore Lorian Price with a time of 25.72 seconds, followed by Towns, Robinson and freshman Kyndel Carr.\nOnly IU entered participants in the 600-meter dash. Sophomore Stacey Clausing placed first with a time of 1:36.69 minutes followed by freshman Nikki Peterson and freshman Lauren Keefe. \nIU swept first and second place in the 800-meter run as well with sophomore Christina Barniak finishing first and senior Ashley Groth second.\nSophomore Courtney Johnson captured first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.81 seconds.\nIn the 4x400 meter relay, IU's "B" squad finished first with a time of 3:54.89 minutes and the IU "A" squad placed second.\nIU took first through third place in the high jump. Junior Jean Schaffer made the highest leap for the Hoosiers at 1.63 meters.\nIn the shot put, junior Jenna Wienke finished the highest for IU at fourth place with a distance of 10.34 meters. IU's freshman Beth Gibbs placed fifth with a distance of 8.05 meters.
IU returns to U.S. with Big Ten win\nAfter traveling more than 2,000 miles to face the Mexican National Team, the No. 25 ranked Hoosiers returned to face Big Ten rival Ohio State and captured a win to go 1-1 in the Big Ten and extend their winning streak to four. The 130-111 win makes the team 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. \nDominating performances from swimmers sophomore Leila Vaziri, junior Doherty Colgin and divers senior Cassandra Cardinell and sophomore Lindsay Weigle helped extend IU's win streak to four meets. \n"Considering the whirlwind travel we have had in the last week, we put together a good solid meet," said coach Dorsey Tierney. "We are making big strides and I am pleased with the effort."\nThe Buckeyes took the lead early on with a score of 11-4 after three disqualifications in the 400-yard medley relay. The Buckeyes maintained their lead until the 200-yard freestyle when IU captured the top two finishes with Vaziri taking first and Colgin taking second. The score then read 28-25 in favor of IU.\nThe Hoosiers never looked back and maintained their lead throughout the meet. IU went on to capture four more event titles as sophomore Annica Lofstedt took first in the 50-yard freestyle. \nIn the diving breaks of the meet, the IU proved to be too much for the Buckeyes as it dominated in the one and three-meter diving competition. In the one-meter diving event IU took the top three finishes Cardinell and Weigle finishing first and second. In the three-meter event the Hoosiers did not take first but did settle for the second, third and fourth place finishes with Bloomington native Weigle taking second. \nNext up for the Hoosiers is facing rival Purdue at 1 p.m. Jan. 22 in West Lafayette.
