Big Ten says officials got it wrong with foul shots

Last-second shot should not have counted Saturday

After all of the debate, the Big Ten is coming clean regarding its officials ruling at the conclusion of the first overtime in IU's 75-73 win against Purdue Saturday.\nPurdue's Carl Landry's game-tying field goal with no time remaining should not have counted. Instead, Landry, who was fouled in the act of shooting, should've been awarded two free throws with no time on the clock.\nThe Big Ten said in a statement that the officials "incorrectly interpreted playing rules regarding a made basket at or near the expiration of the game clock."\nWith IU leading 63-61 with 0.9 seconds on the clock, Purdue's Carl Landry scored and was fouled as time expired. The officials consulted the courtside television monitors, and the ruling on the court was that Landry scored and was fouled. Landry was awarded the following free throw, which he missed, and IU went on to win in the second overtime.\nAccording to the Big Ten's statement, the officials correctly called the foul, but the Big Ten's weekly review saw that the ball was still in Landry's hands when time expired. Therefore, according to 2005 NCAA Basketball Rules and Interpretations, Landry should not have been awarded the basket and should have been given two free throws with no time remaining on the clock.\nIU coach Mike Davis said in a statement that he was proud of the way his team kept the composure and confidence Saturday.\n"We really appreciate the Big Ten Conference's efforts to ensure that officiating is as thorough and objective as possible," Davis said. "Indiana-Purdue is one of the best rivalries in the country, and both teams played so hard Saturday. It was a great game for the fans."\nThe Big Ten stated that it wouldn't have any additional comment on the matter.
