After suffering two tough losses on the road to start Big Ten play, the Hoosiers were looking to salvage the three-game road trip with a win over archrival Purdue. Instead, IU got their worst-scoring night in school history, losing to Purdue 51-31. The loss keeps them winless in conference play.\nThings looked bad for the Hoosiers (7-6, Big Ten 0-3) from the outset, as they struggled to scrounge together points, a problem that would plague the team all night. It took the team nearly four minutes before they got on the board, and by then, the No. 24 Boilermakers (9-4, Big Ten 2-1) had a 6-point lead.\nAfter trailing the entire first half by as much as 15, the Hoosiers whittled the lead down to seven going into the break.\nThe same shooting woes that plagued IU throughout the first half worsened in the second, as the team shot 10 percent. For the game the Hoosiers shot 18.8 percent en route to IU's record-setting performance. The program's previous lowest total came against William & Penn in the 1976-1977 season.\nScoring problems continued in the second half for both teams as they combined to score only 18 points over the first 10 minutes of the half, with the Boilermakers leading 38-27. The 11-point margin was as close as the Hoosiers would get as IU was held to just 4 points the rest of the way.\nOn a night where free throw shooting would have helped the Hoosiers, they were only able to get to the line 10 times, as Purdue outscored IU from the line by 12. \nThe bad shooting was spread all around, as senior guard LeAnn Stephenson missed 16 shots and junior guard Cyndi Valentin was held well below her scoring output with only 1 point, missing all 10 of her field goal attempts. Junior forward Angela Hawkins paced the team in scoring with 8 points.\nPurdue continued its early dominance as the Boilermakers went on a 15-3 run over the next 8 minutes to increase the lead to 23-5. Purdue was led by senior Emily Heikes and Katie Gearlds with 11 points each.\nThe Hoosiers will have to wait a week before they can end the losing streak, as they will next face Northwestern at 7 p.m. in Assembly Hall.\nThe loss keeps IU scratching its head, as it has had to deal with inconsistent play all season, IU coach Kathi Bennett said.\n"Defensively, I have no complaints, we really have to credit Purdue," Bennett said. "We were not nearly as sharp as we could have been. We need to be better at stepping up and competing"
