Streak stays alive as IU downs Purdue

This Saturday, not only did the Hoosiers extend their win streak to five meets, but also five straights wins over No. 19 Purdue in dual meets.\nThe No. 24 IU Women's Swimming and Diving team took on its in-state rival in West Lafayette, sinking the Boilermakers 157-141.\n"Good meet, top to bottom," said coach Dorsey Tierney. "The rankings did not matter to me when we faced them today and we pulled out a decisive win."\nFrom the start of the meet, the Hoosiers stayed solid and generated a good lead as sophomore Leila Vaziri, junior Kristen Bradley, sophomore Annica Lofstedt and senior Erin Smith captured the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:44.54. Junior Lauren Torpey took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle and posted the sixth best time in IU history with 10:02.77. Later in the meet she took runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle by beating out her opponent by two-tenths of a second and gave the Hoosiers a one and two top place finish with junior Doherty Colgin taking first. \n"I felt very solid about my performance," Torpey said. "It is always a good feeling when beating them and we enjoy having this rivalry."\nFrom then on it was a sway of lead changes with IU setting the pace. Vaziri drowned the Boilermakers two more times as she took the top finish in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. \nGreat dominance came once again from the diving squad as the senior Cassandra Cardinell took the crown in the one meter diving break with a score of 291.90 and fellow divers freshman Christina Loukas taking third with 290.48 and fourth claimed by junior Lisa Silvestri. In the three meter diving break Purdue placed first but IU diver Silvestri took second and sophomore Lindsay Weigle placed third. \nIn the final event of the meet, disqualifications were given to both Hoosier relay teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay, but IU had built up a lead that could not be stopped. After downing the Boilers, the Hoosiers improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.\nThe Hoosiers will face Penn State 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.\n-- Contact Staff Writer Doug Klausen at dklausen@indiana.edu.
