Haas breaks 5,000-meter record

For the second straight weekend, Stephen Haas put himself atop the IU record books. Saturday evening at the Tyson Invitational, the junior from Huntersville, N.C., erased Chris Powers' 5,000-meter indoor record with a run of 13:41, breaking Powers' record by 18 seconds and Haas' own personal best by 25 seconds. His time gave him a second-place finish and another NCAA automatic-qualifying mark. \nLast weekend, Haas broke Bob Kennedy's 3,000-meter record at the Meyo Invitational. \nA number of other performances stand out from IU's weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. \nFriday evening the squad of newly anointed sub-four-minute milers Sean and John Jefferson, sophomore All-American David Neville and senior Rodney Hollis posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 9:33 in the distance medley relay.\nSean Jefferson returned to the track the following day to post an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8:03 in the 3,000-meters. Neville also posted two NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 200-and 400-meters, good for 3rd and 4th place. Hollis returned to the track to post a personal best in the 800-meters at 1:49.85, good for 3rd. \nDecorated junior All-American Aarik Wilson posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 16.36-meters in the triple jump, and also earned 3rd place in the long jump with a mark of 7.55-meters, topping his season best. \nJunior Ryan Ketchum bettered his NCAA provisional mark with a heave of 18.55 in the shot put, finishing 2nd. \nJunior Stephanos Iaonnou continued his hot streak, running 7.87 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to better his own IU school record. \nIU returns to action in the Hoosier Hills Invitational next weekend for a final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships in two weeks held at Purdue University.
