Women's golf team tees up for spring

The IU women's golf team opens its spring campaign today and Tuesday as part of a 15-team field at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.\nLed by coach Clint Wallman, the Hoosiers look to build on their improvement during the fall season, as well as in the off season.\n"We have been practicing very hard in less than desirable conditions," Wallman said in a statement. "There were huge amounts of improvement, and everyone worked very hard in the off season."\nTeeing it up for Wallman's squad this week will be senior Bethany Brunner, juniors Katie Carlson and Molly Redfearn, as well as freshmen Elaine Harris and Stephanie Mayotte. \nRedfearn, the stroke average leader for the Hoosiers, will lead the young team on the course. Harris is making only her fourth collegiate start, and Mayotte is making her IU debut.\nThe Central District Invitational will feature six teams in the top 25, including No. 8 Ohio State, No. 13 University of Missouri, No. 14 Louisiana State University, No. 20 University of Arkansas, No. 23 Michigan and No. 24 Southern Methodist University. \nLast year, the Hoosiers placed 14th in the Central District, shooting a 957 three-round total (329-318-310). Brunner is the only Hoosier in the lineup this week who competed in last year's tournament.\nThe tournament begins 8 a.m. today at River Wilderness Golf Club with 36 holes of play. The final 18 holes will be played at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
