Around The Game

Twins beat White Sox 5-2 Sunday\nMINNEAPOLIS -- Johan Santana made sure the Minnesota Twins' first losing streak of the season didn't last too long.\nAfter watching teammates Kyle Lohse and Brad Radke get roughed up in consecutive losses to the Chicago White Sox, Santana stopped the skid with 11 strikeouts in seven innings to help Minnesota avoid getting swept by its division rivals with a 5-2 victory Sunday night.\n"You don't want to get swept by your rivals," said Santana, who signed a four-year, $40 million deal in the offseason after winning the AL Cy Young award last year. "It's early in the season, but every game counts."\nTorii Hunter keyed a big third inning with a three-run homer and Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Arena football player dies of presumed spinal cord injury\nLOS ANGELES -- Former NFL defensive lineman Al Lucas died Sunday from a presumed spinal cord injury sustained while trying to make a tackle for the Los Angeles Avengers during an Arena Football League game, the team said.\nLucas was pronounced dead at California Hospital after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, team physician Dr. Luga Podesta said in a statement.\nA call to a California Hospital spokesman was not returned.\nThe 26-year-old Lucas was injured during a first-quarter kickoff return against the New York Dragons.\nTelevision replays showed Lucas bending down to make a tackle. The Dragons' ball carrier and a blocker tumbled over his head and back, with the blocker's leg appearing to hit Lucas in the head. Lucas did not move after falling to the ground.

Extra innings gives Cubs 6-5 win\nCHICAGO -- Todd Hollandsworth feels he gets more comfortable at the plate as the game goes on.\nThat paid off for the Cubs in the 12th inning Sunday when he hit a run-scoring single through a drawn-in infield to give Chicago a 6-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.\n"Honestly, for some reason I'm probably more nervous when the game starts than in the situation there," Hollandsworth said. "For some reason, I seem to relax, just really bear down and focus."\nJeromy Burnitz hit a triple off the left-center field wall with one out in the 12th against Derrick Turnbow (0-1), the sixth Milwaukee pitcher. After an intentional walk to Derrek Lee, Hollandsworth delivered.\n"(The pitch) was down and away and he just slapped it over and through the hole," Turnbow said. "It just happens sometimes."\nReliever Glendon Rusch (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits and struck out four.
