The Hoosier baseball team took a break from Big Ten action Wednesday as they battled Miami University of Ohio in a non-conference match-up. IU was victorious 5-2 -- even with five errors in the game. IU coach Bob Morgan said he was pleased with the team's performance despite the mistakes made on the field.\n"It was a good win for us even, though we had the five errors," Morgan said. "Miami is a good team and our kids really responded well today."\nSenior Joe Kemp, the Big Ten's RBI leader, made a relief appearance for the Hoosiers and picked up his first save of the season. The Hoosiers used five different pitchers in the contest, including sophomores Matt Saba and Joe Trucchio. Saba was credited with the win and improved his overall record to 3-1, while Trucchio pitched two innings of shutout relief.\n"We really did a good job and pulled it together today," Trucchio said. "The errors are a concern, but we don't want to dwell on the negatives. We just want to take the positives out of the situation."\nJunior left fielder Jay Brant led the Hoosier offense, which recorded nine hits in the game. Brant, who sustained a broken jaw in last weekend's series against Minnesota, went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to pace the IU lineup. Junior first baseman Ryan Parker added two RBIs for the Hoosiers, while junior designated hitter Zach Boswell and senior infielder Corby Heckman added one apiece.\nWhile the Hoosier offense remains atop the Big Ten, Kemp said he is optimistic the defense can erase the large number of errors committed in recent games.\n"We know what we have to work on and what we have to do," Kemp said. "Some teams we will be able to make them and still get the win, but not for all of them."\nKemp, who was unable to make a relief appearance in last week's series because of an injury, said he was happy to get the chance in Wednesday's win.\n"Anytime the team can get a win that is great," Kemp said. "But it felt really good to get out there on the mound."\nWith the win, the Hoosiers improved to 18-12 on the year and snapped the Redhawks' six-game winning streak. The team will head to Iowa this weekend for a four-game series against the Hawkeyes.\n-- Contact Staff Writer Matt Mattucci at mmattucc@indiana.edu.
