IU celebrates Native American Pow Wow

The Bloomington community and IU students experienced American Indian history and culture this weekend at the First Nations fourth annual Pow Wow. The event, which was held from Friday until Sunday at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse, was a celebration of Native American culture, arts and music. The pow wow's events included booths of authentic American Indian arts and crafts, as well as an extensive educational display of research posters created by IU students. Decorated buffalo hide was on display, as well as drummers educating young children how to drum.\nHighlights of the weekend featured the ceremonial "grand entries" of American Indians representing tribes from across the United States into the fieldhouse for ceremonial dances. Dancers came from North Carolina, Virginia, Illinois and Kentucky to be a part of the celebration. The participants were dressed in full regalia, which included headdresses, decorative feathers worn on the back and animal skin pants.
