Junior Kevin Swander qualifies for World University Games in Turkey

The IU swimmers have represented their program well so far while competing in the World Championship trials in Indianapolis. Against the country's best, the Hoosiers have made significant noise in capturing spots for either the World Championships or the World University Games.\nThe six-day event has seen some great racing, especially from six-time gold medalist Michael Phelps. He has won three event titles, the most among all male swimmers, as well as a trip to Montreal for the World Championships. But the excitement of the trials resonated 50 miles south of the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.\nIU junior Kevin Swander already has paved his way to Izmir, Turkey, for the World University Games in July. Swander broke the school record in the 100-meter breaststroke with a fourth-place finish in the qualifying heats. On the first day of the finals, the All-American finished third overall, solidifying his way to Turkey.\nOn the third day, IU sophomore Scott Tanner took the second-highest finish for the Hoosiers in Indianapolis with 14th place in the 100-meter butterfly. Tanner moved to the consolation finals after taking the last spot with a 16th-place finish in the qualifying heats. His time in the finals was the third-fastest time in school history, behind legends Gary Hall and Mark Spitz.\nSophomore Ryan McNeill posted the 15th-fastest time in the qualifying heats for the 1,500-meter freestyle. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native will compete in tonight's consolation finals.\nSwander is seeded seventh in today's 200-meter breaststroke qualifiers for a chance to go to Montreal for the World Championships. The final day also has McNeill seeded 13th in the qualifiers for the 800-meter freestyle.
