3 state records fall at girl's track and field state meet

North's Deloney wins discus title as a freshman

Three state records were broken, a hometown hero won the discus throw and one school dominated the track events Saturday in front of a crowd of 4,767 people at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex. \nThe dominating school -- Fort Wayne Northrop High School -- finished with 65 total points at the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Track Championship. Northrop easily cruised over Lawrence Central High School, who scored 37 points. It was Northrop's sixth straight state championship in track and field -- the longest consecutive streak in Indiana state track and field history. Ben Davis High School was third, and North Central High School and Chesterton High School rounded out the top-five. \nFans also saw some exciting firsts, as three state records fell at the event, setting off the loudest cheers of the afternoon. \nThe records were set in the pole vault, 100-meter hurdles, and the 4 X 800 meter relay. The pole vault record was broken by two very close friends who shared the honor. They were Brianna Neumann of champion Northrop and Katie Veith of Fort Wayne Homestead High School. They set a new height of 12-feet-9-inches, shattering the previous height of 12-6 set by Veith last year. But the state championship was awarded to Neumann because she reached the new height in fewer attempts than Veith.\nA record was also set in the 4 X 800 meter relay by Northridge High School in a time of 9 minutes and 8.33 seconds, eclipsing the previous time of 9:09.50 set by Chesterton. In the 100-meter hurdles Vanneisha Ivy of \nMuncie Central High School set the new state mark with a time of 13.95 seconds. The three records set were the second most set at a state championship behind the four that were set in 1986. (Three of those records were set by the same person -- Maicel Malone.)\nLocally, Bloomington High School North scored big as well, finishing 13th at the meet. In the discus, freshman Rachel Deloney won the event with a toss of 148.01 feet. North also came in third in section 1 of the 4 X 400 meter relay as well as the 400-meter dash. \nGeneva Trotter of Brebeuf Jesuit High School won the Mental Attitude award as well as the long jump with a distance of 18-7 1/4. \nBen Davis, which placed third with 33 points, won the 4 X 400 meter relay. Rachel Stichter of Wawasee High School ran away with the 3200 meter run. Jeanne Roberts won the 100 and 200-meter dash for runner up Lawrence Central. Megan Flynn of Mishawaka High School won the 800-meter run. The 400-meter dash was won by Caitlin Lauer of South Bend Adams High School. Kayla Tucker of Evansville \nReitz High School won the high jump. New Albany High School picked up their only win of the day in the 4 X 100 meter relay. The 1600-meter run put Wendi Robinson of Danville High School on top while Kimmeyeyonia Reed of Warren Central High School was victorious in the shot put.
