Experience building top priority in season opener

4 freshman, 4 returnees will represent Hoosiers

For the Hoosiers, this weekend's tournament will bring some much needed experience as they return to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Western Michigan Invitational. \nThe IU women's tennis team is sending four freshmen amd four returnees into competition to recapture last year's top performance. Head coach Lin Loring sees the next few days as a way to give his newcomers some match-play experience.\n"We will be leaving our top three players from last year home because they will be playing the All-American Championships in October," said Loring. "This will give all our other returning players and our four new players a chance to move up into the top flights and get better competition. We are looking forward to seeing how our new players adjust to college tennis."\nJunior Laura McGaffigan and seniors Dora Vastag and Sarah Batty will give way to the younger and less experienced Hoosiers. \n"Personally, I don't want to put that much pressure on myself," said junior Cecile Petron. "I just want to do my best and see how I compared to last year."\nPetron, who will be playing doubles this weekend, is one of four returning Hoosiers going to Kalamazoo. The others are sophomores Nikki Hein, Briana Williams and Pam Gesellchen. Williams won all three of her matches at last year's Western Michigan Invitational and is looking for a repeat performance.\n"I just want to play my best," Williams said. "I think we're the best team going in. Hopefully, we can each win our divisions."\nWilliams is coming off a light off-season after pulling her back during last year's Big Ten Championships. For her, the emphasis is less on the "W" and more on getting into the swing of things.\n"I don't think (winning) matters as much. It's just getting used to playing matches again," Williams said.\nOut of the returning players, Gesellchen and Hein have less match-play experience than Petron and Williams. However, their collegiate experience is leaps and bounds beyond the four freshmen. \n"As a team, we should do well," Petron said. "We have a lot of good freshmen and we want to see how they play. Hopefully they play well"
