Freshmen lead IU to 11th place finish in Chardon, Ohio

The IU men's golf team completed its first tournament of the season Tuesday by finishing 11th at the NCAA Central Regional Preview in Chardon, Ohio.\nThe Hoosiers shot a combined 894 (300-297-297) for the tournament, finishing three strokes shy of tying Penn State for 10th place. The University of Louisville took home the team title with an 871.\nTwo freshmen led the IU charge, giving top-25 performances in their first collegiate events. Freshmen Jorge Campillo and Drew Allenspach finished tied for 15th and 22nd with three-round totals of 218 and 221, respectively. Rounding out the five-man Hoosier lineup was sophomore Santiago Quirarte, who finished 32nd with a 223, junior Aaron Harrellfinished 70th with a 234, and freshman Seth Brandon's 237 was good for the 77th spot.\nWith such a young lineup, including three freshmen making their collegiate debuts, head coach Mike Mayer is aware the team's finish was not poor at all but felt it still wasn't indicative of the ability of this year's team.\n"We knew that it would be a little bit of a roller coaster up and down, and it was that way this tournament," Mayer said. "But we know we have a lot of talent, and we will continue to get better."\nWith the season less than two weeks old and only one tournament on the books, Mayer is still confident in this year's team and knows there is a very important lesson the team can take from this tournament. \n"We feel like we played not nearly up to our ability," Mayer said. "(But) we still managed to beat some pretty good teams. So if we play the way we're capable, we now know we can beat a lot of teams"
