Hoosier growth to continue in Michigan tournament

The maturation process for the IU men's golf team continues as the Hoosiers' five-man lineup for this weekend's Wolverine Intercollegiate Tournament includes three freshmen for the second time in three tournaments this season.\nHoosiers making the trip to Ann Arbor include senior Scott Seibert, sophomore Santiago Quirarte and freshmen Jorge Campillo, Drew Allenspach, and Brandon Pike. Freshman Seth Brandon is also making the trip, but is competing as an individual. \nCampillo is coming off back-to-back top 15 finishes in his first two collegiate tournaments, while Allenspach finished with a tie for No. 22 at the season-opening NCAA Central Regional Preview two weeks ago. With performances like that, IU head coach Mike Mayer isn't worried about inexperience being a factor for those two.\n"Jorge and Drew are not freshmen anymore," Mayer said. "They have had two solid performances, and they have grown up quickly this season."\nYet this lineup is more than just talented freshmen. Quirarte is coming off a top 20 finish last weekend, finishing in a tie for No. 19. However, after a stellar freshman season last year, Mayer feels Quirarte still hasn't hit his stride yet.\n"His first two rounds this season were very disappointing for him, but he played very solid up at Minnesota this past weekend," Mayer said. "That's what we expected from (Quirarte), but we expect really great things from him this tournament." \nPike is making his collegiate debut this weekend, but Mayer hopes the presence of Seibert in the lineup counters any lack of experience Pike might exhibit. And in addition to the obvious experience Seibert brings to the table, he also has had some success at the Michigan golf course in his career, making Mayer happy Seibert is making the trip.\n"He really helps stabilize the team," Mayer said. "But he has also played well on this golf course. In his first tournament at Michigan, he shot 72-72-72 as a freshman, so hopefully that carries through to this weekend."\nWith the combination of talent, signs of progress and the tournament field, Mayer is optimistic about the possibilities this weekend holds.\n"It's a strong field this week, but probably not as strong as the fields we played in the last few tournaments," Mayer said. "We really feel like we can go up and compete for this \nchampionship"
