Similar to this past weekend, the IU football and men's soccer teams each start off their seasons in grand fashion. Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter leads the football team to a 41-10 win with two interceptions, including one he returned for a 96-yard touchdown. On the soccer field, junior midfielder Brian Plotkin plays an integral offensive role as IU wins both of its weekend matches.

The IU men's soccer team lost twice in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic to start its season. The 2-1 loss to UCLA sends the Hoosiers to their worst start since 1992. The match solidifies the UCLA-IU rivalry as it becomes the third tight game in three years between the two teams. In 1999, the Hoosiers beat the Bruins in a quadruple overtime, NCAA Tournament game, and the year before, UCLA edged IU in its last game of the regular season.
Sept. 7, 1995
The IU football team prepares for its first game as head coach Bill Mallory names junior quarterback Chris Dittoe the key to the team's offense. Also returning for the Hoosier offense is tailback Alex Smith, who earned All-Big Ten awards the year before with 10 rushing touchdowns and 1,475 yards rushing, the third highest total ever in NCAA Division I football for a freshman.
