Senior Katie Carlson became the first known golfer in IU women's golf history to record a hole-in-one yesterday at the Shootout at the Legends to pace the Hoosiers to a tie for eleventh place. Carlson recorded a 77-81-81 (239) for the Hoosiers. A 4-iron was the club of choice for the Livonia, Mich., native on the 164 yard, par-3 seventh hole. \n"I am really excited about the hole-in-one," Carlson said in a statement. "I started off poorly, so it felt good because it was a big momentum swing in my round. When I first hit the shot, I wasn't too thrilled about it to be honest. I was hoping it would get over a bunker and once it did, it kept rolling and went in. It was especially exciting because my parents were here watching, so they had a chance to see it." \nThe tournament, held at the Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Ind., featured stiff competition, but IU head coach Clint Wallman was pleased with the overall effort, and of course, the big shot.\n"I am very proud of our girls, and of course the highlight of the day was Katie's hole-in-one," Wallman said. "The shot she hit never left the flag, hit on the front of the green and rolled right in. It was very exciting. I am not surprised, though, because of the quality shots she has been hitting all year." \nSenior Shannon Johnson, who led the Hoosiers in scoring in the first two tournaments of the season, found herself again near the top of the leader board after firing rounds of 71-72-75. She finished tied for fifth and marked the second time she has finished in the top 10 this season along with a first-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. \nSophomore Elaine Harris fired a 229 and the two freshmen, Tiffany Hockensmith and Amber Lindgren, fired a 237 and 242, respectively. \nThe Hoosiers finished with a 921 while Kent State scored an 882 to win the tournament. The Hoosiers will be back in action this weekend when they head to Penn State for the Lady Lion Invitational.
