Women's Soccer: IU puts the 'O' in Hoosier with 3-2 win

Season's fate rests in rivalry game after split

Although the IU women's soccer team has struggled offensively this season, it might have found its stride at just the right time.\nAfter being shut out Friday against Illinois, the Hoosiers broke out for three goals in a 3-2 victory against Iowa Sunday. \nWith the win, the team needs a victory in its last game of the season against archrival Purdue Thursday to qualify for the Big Ten tournament.\nIn their first game of the weekend, IU and Illinois played an even match until 87 minutes into the contest when the Illini netted the only goal of the game to give them the 1-0 win. \nThe Hoosiers' best scoring chance came from freshman Molly Krueger, who chipped a shot that just nicked the crossbar and sailed out of bounds.\nWhen Krueger got a chance to score again Sunday, she didn't miss. \nKrueger scored a goal in the first half and was one of three Hoosiers to do so as IU beat Iowa 3-2 in overtime Sunday.\nFreshman Molly Beckwith scored the winning goal after a hustle play by sophomore Lindsay McCarthy who assisted on the goal.\n"McCarthy and I made eye contact," Beckwith said. "She then lofted the ball beautifully to my head. It was one of the easiest goals I've scored because it was set up so well."\nMcCarthy had one of her best games of the season, scoring a goal in the second half and also tallying the game-winning assist.\n"I just go out there looking to win," McCarthy said. "Go crazy, have fun and try and help my team win."\nIU coach Mick Lyon was pleased that the offense started to click Sunday.\n"I give the team an 'A' for today," Lyon said. "We know the offense would take some time to come together with all the young girls we have playing. I'm very happy we got the win today."\nSunday's game was one of the more physical matches of the season for IU, as there were more than twenty fouls called and three yellow cards given out between the two teams. However, McCarthy said it's something the teams expect in conference play.\n"Iowa or any team in the Big Ten is going to come out and play physical," McCarthy said. "We just always have to come out and be ready to play"
