292 yards, 35 points lead Gophers to 42-21 victory

The Hoosiers hung their heads because the game was over.\nEntering the second half with a 14-7 lead and possession of the ball, the offense started a drive to open the third quarter hoping to increase the Gophers' deficit. \nBut by the end of the quarter, many of the 30,656 fans in Memorial Stadium had already gone home. The Golden Gophers had a near perfect third quarter, scoring a touchdown in each of their four possessions to build an insurmountable 34-14 lead by the fourth.\n"We did not come out as fired up as we were (in the first half)," sophomore quarterback Blake Powers said. "It just shows you cannot have spells like that in this game if you want to compete in this conference."\nMinnesota running back Gary Russell had 11 carries for 57 yards in the first half, but added 17 carries and 131 yards in the second half for a career-high 188 yards on the day. His three touchdowns in the second half padded the Gophers lead and befuddled the Hoosier defense.\n"I don't know what happened in the second half," junior defensive back Troy Grosfield said. "It just seemed like nothing was going right."\nIU coach Terry Hoeppner said his defense saw a different Minnesota offensive attack in the second half and failed to make the necessary changes.\n"They stopped our first drive, got good field position and made a personnel adjustment," Hoeppner said. "Their adjustment kept us out of a personnel group that we had some success with. They went to a one tight end, three receiver set. We did not adjust to it very well."\nThe loss dropped the Hoosiers to 4-5 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten. Hoeppner said he was disappointed in Saturday's game and that his team now has its "backs against the wall," needing to win both its remaining games to become bowl eligible. \n"The word of the day was attitude," Hoeppner said. "We had to play this game for 60 minutes with an attitude that would take care of everything else. It would help us tackle better, make us very aware and put us in position to make big plays. In the second half, that attitude pendulum swung their way"
