Despite Marco's 34, IU can't hold off No. 1 Duke

Senior forward Marco Killingsworth won the battle on the inside, but IU couldn't capitalize.\nKillingsworth put up a career high 34 points and 10 rebounds in the Hoosiers 75-67 loss at Assembly Hall Wednesday night, outshining Duke forward Shelden Williams, who went for 13 points and nine rebounds.\n"I feel I was out there to prove myself," Killingsworth said. "He might have been guarding me like I was just another guy."\nDuke guard J.J. Redick made the difference for his team, giving them 29 points. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski credited Redick's will, comparing him to former Duke greats Grant Hill, Johnny Dawkins and Shane Battier among others.\n"He refuses to lose," Krzyzewski said.\nThe Hoosiers got off to a slow start, giving up 10 straight points, but sophomore forward Robert Vaden ended the Blue Devils' run with a slash to the basket.\nThe Blue Devil lead then swelled to 16-4 -- the biggest deficit IU faced all game.\nThe Hoosiers responded, getting within four points two different times: at 22-18 and 30-26. The charge back into the game was led by Killingsworth, who put in 17 first-half points and missed only one of his nine initial attempts. The Auburn transfer went on two 6-0 runs of his own before the first half ended at 44-35.\n"Tonight (Killingsworth) went against the best big man (Williams) in the country and he played well," Davis said.\nThe Blue Devils began the first half with forward Lee Melchionni and Williams each picking up two quick fouls, forcing them to sit.\nWith them playing rationed minutes, the Hoosiers pulled to 50-46 off a 3-pointer from senior guard Marshall Strickland, who brought Assembly Hall to a roaring stand. But the Blue Devils fended off the IU charge, pushing the score to 55-46.\n"We should have never taken the ball up slow," Davis said. "We were walking the ball up -- we never walk the ball up."\nIn a 58-48 hole after the media timeout at 12:00, the Hoosiers fought their way out of the deficit to take the lead 59-58 off a dunk from Killingsworth, who eclipsed the 30-point mark with 10:30 left to go in the game. With the upset looming, it became too loud to even think in Assembly Hall.\n"When they went ahead that was about as loud as any place I've ever heard outside of Cameron," Krzyzewski said.\nAfter a three-point play from Redick, junior guard Rod Wilmont made good on a drive to the basket, only to have it waved off by officials because of a foul that put Killingsworth on the line. If Wilmont's basket would have counted, the score would have moved to 70-67, but instead Killingsworth missed the front end of the one-and-one and the score remained 70-65 with 2:20 to go.\n"We've got to win (in that situation) -- it's just that simple," Vaden said. "We eased up in the second half."\nAfter connecting on 16 three-point attempts in the two previous games, IU was held to only two 3-point baskets.\n"Our plan was to take away their threes," Krzyzewski said. "Although Killingsworth was great, we can respond to those twos"
