Enjoy your cake, coach

After a 75-67 win over Eastern Michigan Saturday night, IU coach Mike Davis embraced hugs and handshakes from his players. His wife, Tamilya, even promised him a cake. \nBut it wasn't just because the Hoosiers tallied their fourth win of the season, and it certainly wasn't because they beat a mid-major school.\nWhen the final buzzer rang, Davis became the fourth coach in IU history to hit the 100 victory mark and the second fastest behind Bob Knight. It took Knight five seasons and Davis until the start of his sixth.\n"It really feels good," Davis said. "I wish it would have happened last year ... I'm proud of this basketball team and they all shook my hand (after the game)."\nFormer coaches Everett Dean and Branch McCracken are the only other men to eclipse the milestone with 162 and 364 career wins, respectively.\n"I've loved (Davis) since the day I've gotten here," junior guard Errek Suhr said. "I owe him the world right now because of the opportunity he's given me just to walk on, and now I'm on a scholarship. I love him as a person and as a coach."\nSenior forward Marco Killingsworth came to IU after three seasons in an Auburn program that underwent a major coaching change. The senior transfer cited frustrations with the newly appointed coaching staff as reason for his departure, saying earlier this season that it's different in Bloomington with coach Davis. He said he likes Davis' program because of the way it governs him as a player.\n"Coach Davis gave me so much freedom to do so much. It boosted my confidence," Killingsworth said in September. "In high school, my coach didn't let me dribble the ball; he didn't let me do a lot of stuff, but coach Davis, he'll give you that freedom to just be a player."\nSenior guard Marshall Strickland was happy to get his coach to the century mark.\n"I think he's a great coach," Strickland said. "I've been around a lot of good coaches, and coach Davis is one of the best -- he's a great teacher."\nDavis was able to share the night with someone whom he worked alongside on the Hoosier bench for a good deal of his IU career, but former staff member Dusty May wasn't sitting in the audience or at the end of IU's bench.\nHe was sitting on the Eagles' bench.\nNow an EMU assistant coach, May grew up in Terre Haute and was affiliated with IU basketball for seven of the past nine years. He spent four seasons as a student manager under Bob Knight and three as a member of Davis' coaching staff.\nThe Eagles journeyed to Bloomington because of the relationship their coaching staff holds with Davis.\n"It doesn't hurt (the Eagles) to have Dusty May sitting over there who knew everything we do," Davis said. "It was funny because we'd run something and their guys would know exactly what we were doing"
