Hoosiers swept for 2nd straight week

The IU baseball team was swept in a three-game series for the second consecutive weekend, this time at the hands of the No. 24 Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes and a pitching staff that held down the Hoosiers' bats nearly all weekend. \nIU (0-6) lost the first game of the series 4-0, thanks to a strong performance from Miami starter Carlos Guttierez, who threw six innings allowing four hits and striking out six to pick up the win.\nThe Hurricanes (12-6) jumped out to an early lead for Guttierez, scoring three runs in the first two innings against IU's starter Tyler Tufts. Miami added its final run in the fourth inning on an error by IU catcher Billy O'Conner. \nAfter Guttierez made his exit, the Miami bullpen pitched the final three innings nearly flawlessly, giving up only one hit. Tufts (0-1) took the loss.\nMiami's game two starter Manny Miguelez turned in the best pitching performance of the weekend in the 7-2 victory, throwing a complete game and allowing only one earned run while striking out eight Hoosiers.\nIU scored that one earned run in the top of the first when designated hitter Zach Boswell grounded into a fielder's choice, driving in Reggie Watson. Another run crossed the plate, though unearned, when shortstop Tad Reida drove in Jay Brant. \nMiguelez settled down from there, not allowing a hit for the rest of the game. \nHoosier starter Josh Lewis (0-2) took the loss in the second game, allowing all seven runs Miami scored in the game. Miami right fielder Tommy Giles led the offensive attack against Lewis with a 2-for-4 day and two RBIs.\nThe IU bats came to life in game three against Miami starter Scott Maine.\nThe Hoosiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to sound execution. Reida doubled to lead off the second, was sacrificed over by Michael Nilles and came in to score on Steve Head's RBI single. Reida scored again in the fourth on a throwing error by Miami second baseman Jemile Weeks after lining a base hit to right. \nMiami tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run off IU starter Chris McCombs by third baseman Danny Valencia.\nIU took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Reida, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. \n"Today the balls just fell and I got them in the right spot," Reida said.\nMiami would take the lead for the final time in the bottom of the sixth. McCombs recorded one out before walking two straight batters and departing in favor of Brad Davidson. Davidson (0-1) would fail to record an out, allowing both inherited runners to score, as well as two more, for a 6-4 Miami lead and an IU loss. Maine picked up the win for Miami.\n"We went out on the field every day playing like there was no tomorrow," sophomore pitcher David Trager said. "We just couldn't get the timely hitting we needed sometimes"
