Hoosiers top Sycamores in 11 innings; Huddleston doubles home winner

Bogado tallies 22 strikeouts in win, 1 shy of record

Twenty-two strikeouts. Eleven innings. One run.\nAfter the IU softball team's game against instate rival Indiana State last night, these were all the numbers you needed to know. Thankfully for the Hoosiers, the one run belonged to them as they scored in the top of the eleventh inning to take the 1-0 victory. With the win, the Hoosiers move to 26-22-1 on the season. \nThe 22 strikeouts were from senior Mariangee Bogado, who was one strikeout shy of tying the team record she set earlier this season on Feb. 24. Bogando also one-hit the Sycamores.\n"I was just going out there trying to get outs to continue to keep my team in the game," Bogado said. "I wasn't thinking about the strikeouts at all."\nThe Sycamores had a great chance to score in the first inning with runners on first and third and one out. However, the Hoosier defense came up big when ISU failed on a double steal, and a Bogado strikeout ended the threat.\nThen in the top of the second, IU had runners on second and third with one out, and a line drive to the Sycamores third baseman by sophomore Kari Bettenbrock resulted in a double play.\nThe game remained a pitchers' dual throughout, as neither team had another chance to score until the bottom of the seventh. However, Bogado again worked herself out of a jam, inducing a pop-up and a strikeout to end the threat.\nThe lone run of the game was scored in the top of the eleventh inning after junior Heather Hohs reached on an error to open up the inning. Next, sophomore Jennilee Huddleston stepped up to the plate and roped a double off the center field fence for the game winning double.\n"It was a very exciting play," Huddleston said. "I would have liked to have gotten the game over sooner so we could have gotten some more rest, but I'm happy with the result."\nIn the bottom of the inning, Bogado continued her dominant ways, surrendering no hits and fittingly ending the game with her 22nd strikeout. With the win, Bogado improves to 17-8 on the season.\nSenior Lauren Hines, who was 2-5 on the day, said these tough wins are important.\n"These kind of games are a reminder we need to come out and play well every game," Hines said. "We have four Big Ten games left, and these games will help us out in those pressure situations also."\nAfter an off-day today, the Hoosiers travel to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers over the weekend.
