Savage rug burn

The ridiculous rants of a savage demonstrate the utter ignorance of some anti-illegal immigration activists. I'm talking about nationally syndicated conservative radio host Michael Savage. His outlandish March 27 remarks in opposition to recent illegal immigrant demonstrations sparked much-deserved negative controversy.\n"Burn a Mexican flag for those who died that you should have a nationality and a sovereignty. Go out in the street and show you're a man, burn 10 Mexican flags if I could recommend it." \nAs I listened to Savage's furious screams, my stomach turned, and all I could do was shake my head in disappointment.\nDuring the weekend, protestors heeded Savage's orders and set fire to various Mexican flags in the streets of Arizona. This is the wrong path for anti-illegal immigration activists to travel. \nBurning a Mexican flag for America, as Savage put it, does not signify an anti-illegal immigration act. I am a Mexican-American legal citizen of the United States who speaks English perfectly, and I am hugely offended by this gesture. Burning a Mexican flag is offensive to all peoples of Mexican heritage and patriotism. \nThis is an uneducated gesture spurred by an uneducated public figure because not all illegal immigrants come from Mexico. Illegal immigrants are also from Europe, Africa and South America. \nSo I ask the question, are Savage and his followers anti-illegal immigration or are they really just anti-Mexican? \nNo, Savage is no racist. Instead he calls the people of "la raza" (the race) racist for speaking Spanish in the United States. I speak Spanish in this country, but that definitely does not qualify me as a racist. \nLegal immigrants and even American-born citizens like myself speak different languages on the streets all the time and it is not a hate crime against Americans. Savage's ethnocentric attitude has led him to follow a mantra of one country, one language, one people and no love for anyone else. Well, that is not what the United States is about, and if he were a real patriot, he would realize this. \nSavage himself was born to a Russian, Jewish family in the Bronx. His ancestors were likely Russian-speaking immigrants at one point, but apparently he forgot his roots or chose to ignore them.\nHowever, he apparently knows something about the roots of humanity; he compared it with illegal immigration. \nSavage said during human evolution, one species displaced the next until homo sapiens came into existence, and it's happening again. In his words, "We the people are being displaced by the people of Mexico. This is an invasion by any other name." \nNo, Mr. Savage, the Mexican-American War was an invasion; this is just immigration. This isn't the first time the country has had a large influx of immigrants over one period of time and, just like in the past, assimilation will occur.\nSavage needs to think before he opens his mouth or orders his minions to go out and burn things. His talk show reaches 8 million people, and for the good of society, he should find better words to get his \nmessage across.
